Though he has a strong weapon set, Bowser Jr. still falls short of his father's evil and commanding appearance. That in mind, should Mario Bros. 2 replace Bowser with his son, it would be facing a great difficulty.
A more practical path for The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 to follow would be to assign Bowser Jr. a role evocative of his video game equivalent. Usually more often than not, Mario's last boss Mario needs to defeat before encountering Bowser personally uses Bowser Jr. as a secondary adversary. The 2025 film may benefit from a similar mix since it would give the Koopa King's offspring a significant part but not one meant to eclipse Mario's actual foe. Furthermore, following this path might make the villain narrative just enough different from the first film to prevent Bowser from once more feeling too repetitious.
