Greta Gerwig's Narnia Reboot: Exploring the Untold Stories of the Northern Witches

Greta Gerwig's Narnia Reboot: Giving the Northern Witches Their Due!

Netflix's Narnia Reboot: A Chance to Deepen the Chronicles' Lore

Netflix's upcoming Chronicles of Narnia reboot, directed by the incredibly talented Greta Gerwig (fresh off the mega-hit Barbie!), is super exciting! It’s going to take on the familiar Narnia stories, creating another fascinating layer with a focus on previously unmentioned stories from that world; emphasizing that this isn’t just going to be more of the same; It’s an opportunity to delve into those long-standing mysteries and really elevate some classic Narnia characters in creative, new and totally surprising ways! We are especially interested in a very specific group and storyline – those infamous witches, particularly a few extremely powerful and compelling witches.

While we know little about Gerwig’s take on Narnia; we know she brings her signature style (bizarre fantasy, strong female characters) to the table! This is exciting!   Her vision alone offers monumental possibilities and it will be utterly transformative; a possible reimagining of beloved classics from a completely new lens.

The Northern Witches: A Forgotten Corner of Narnia’s Magic

In The Silver Chair, we learn about a bunch of witches living in the dangerous northern wastes (lands that are even more terrifying because they are inhabited by Giants too!). They sometimes attacked Narnia; they clearly exist within the core mythology presented by Lewis, hinting toward these long-standing conflicts and wars; all this detail adds immensely to the deep, dark lore surrounding this mystical land, giving the readers and audiences the context that previous versions might’ve lacked completely.

This group included the legendary White Witch (Jadis) and the Lady of the Green Kirtle. The Green Lady’s importance is quite significant because this particular lady is tied to another hugely popular theory—that she’s actually Jadis reborn; showcasing just how much interest these stories truly have among various fans across different generations. But here’s the big mystery; there is virtually no background on these northern witches; particularly other witches from that period which significantly adds more layers, those depths previously untapped!

Why Gerwig’s Narnia MUST Give the Northern Witches a Backstory

That ambiguous nature of those witches is one aspect Gerwig needs to address.  While the White Witch has a backstory (though quite shallow), the Green Lady appears almost out of nowhere! There was very little effort devoted to building a complex storyline surrounding those witches themselves; and these two characters are some of the best and most well-loved villains.  They are important and really deserve a new kind of treatment given the changed context.

Gerwig could do something incredibly innovative – introducing those brand new characters involved, adding to the already rich history of this world and also add weight to the existing mythology around Narnia. This entire new group of witches presents those powerful story options; making the new take on Lucy and Susan’s development crucial too!

Elevating Narnia's Villains for a Modern Audience

The original Narnia stories made Jadis and the Green Lady fairly simple antagonists– serving as easy archetypes, showing simplistic archetypes from classic fairy tales and myths! It certainly makes sense, this would have achieved the kind of narratives and plots that would have worked extremely well during that period;  that very straightforward kind of character which would create the narrative experience. That type of simplicity however is not well-suited today. Those very simple approaches would leave modern viewers unsatisfied;  especially in modern works.

Giving these characters real backstories; that lived experiences involving magic could totally make them fascinating, truly memorable characters.   They don’t necessarily require that sympathy! They just need depth and real internal lives lived outside the scenes from those specific books, adding important experiences outside those prior contexts.

Conclusion: A Richer, Deeper Narnia Awaits

Gerwig's Narnia reboot offers this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The details added within those various themes – including those choices related to the kinds of characters she chooses to show, and in which way.  That could revolutionize those familiar tales entirely; making this into something different entirely, transforming those classic characters and stories into an equally beloved yet totally fresh storytelling experience. This opportunity to reimagine the narrative in that way would result in creating deeply memorable new moments! This added layer creates new narratives and contexts which might make this series become the most discussed and remembered among those fans familiar with Lewis' original works!
