GxK Finally Disproved The SpaceGodzilla Theory (& Raised A New Godzilla Mystery)
You know how we've all been buzzing about that SpaceGodzilla theory? Well, Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire finally put that to rest. But get this – it actually created a whole new mystery around Godzilla's past!
The Iwi Myths In Godzilla x Kong Finally Debunked The SpaceGodzilla Theory
Remember all those whispers about SpaceGodzilla being the big bad in the Monsterverse? It all started with a few lines in the Godzilla vs. Kong novelization. There was this ancient Iwi prophecy talking about Zo-zla-halawa, this monster who supposedly "ate a star" and battled Kong's people in the Hollow Earth. Everyone thought Zo-zla-halawa was Godzilla, but the description of this monster just made people think it was SpaceGodzilla. You know, that cosmic Godzilla dude with all the awesome powers.
And then, in Godzilla vs. Kong - One Will Fall: The Art of the Ultimate Battle Royale, there was this cave mural showing a winged Godzilla flying over a bunch of apes and other Godzilla-like monsters. This fueled the theory that this winged Godzilla was actually SpaceGodzilla and the true villain of the Titan War. But now that we've seen Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, it seems like that ain't the case.
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire actually gives us a full breakdown of the Iwi myths. And guess what? It confirms that Zo-zla-halawa and Godzilla are the same. Zo-zla-halawa and Godzilla are the same creature, and it wasn't SpaceGodzilla who locked away Skar King. They even show illustrations of a monster that looks exactly like Godzilla, not some cosmic version of him.
Plus, that whole concept art thing? Turns out it might have been Mothra carrying Godzilla instead of a winged Godzilla. This makes a lot more sense now that we know Mothra was in the Hollow Earth and was important to Godzilla and Kong's history. It all fits together.
What Was "The Star" That Godzilla Consumed?
So, if Zo-zla-halawa wasn't SpaceGodzilla, then what's up with that "ate a star" thing? Well, it looks like Godzilla actually ate this star. And we still don't know what it is, but it's probably connected to Godzilla's past. We're only starting to learn more about Godzilla's backstory, and this "star" seems to be a big clue.
Maybe it has something to do with his blue atomic powers. Godzilla vs. Kong hinted that those powers aren't natural for his species. Remember when they showed us the Hollow Earth energy source and how it was the same as Godzilla's power? This means Godzilla harnessed the Hollow Earth energy at some point. The "star" might be how he did it. And maybe it wasn't a literal star after all, but something the Iwi saw as one.
How SpaceGodzilla Can Still Join The Monsterverse
Don't be too bummed that SpaceGodzilla isn't the big bad in the Iwi myths. There's still a way for him to show up! Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, the Apple TV+ show, might have just set up the perfect way. It mentioned that the energy from the Hollow Earth rifts can only be found in pulsars, basically supermassive black holes in space.
And remember how the original SpaceGodzilla got created? By a black hole! So, the Monsterverse could use this to bring in SpaceGodzilla in a way that fits with their existing lore. The Hollow Earth is the heart of Godzilla and Kong's world. Bringing SpaceGodzilla in through the Hollow Earth makes way more sense than just sending Godzilla's DNA into space.
Maybe in the next Godzilla x Kong movie, they'll reveal that a member of Godzilla's species got their DNA messed up by the energy in the Hollow Earth rifts. That's how SpaceGodzilla could be hiding somewhere in the Monsterverse, waiting for his big moment to battle his heroic counterpart. We can only wait and see!
