Could Mothra resurfaced in the Monsterverse once more?
Godzilla x Kong was a huge smash with viewers even if assessments from reviewers were divided. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film currently boasts a poor critics' rating of 54%; yet, the audience score is significantly higher—91%. Wingard's film has now made an amazing $567.5 million globally on a budget thought to be roughly $135 million, reflecting the popularity of the movie among viewers.
Clearly, there is demand in seeing the franchise go on, and the Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire finale surely opens the door for this prospect. The legendary monster lives when the end credits roll after Jia (Kaylee Hottle) brings Mothra back to help Godzilla and Kong. Mothra's last audience view sees her rebuilding the portals to the surface world and the protective barriers around the Iwi tribe's dwelling.
Mothra Theory of Godzilla x Kong Verified by Director
Wingard came back to lead the two eponymous monsters following them as they faced the nefarious Skar King following the success of Godzilla vs. Kong in 2021. Godzilla and Kong seek Mothra for assistance when they discover they are outmatched by the combined might of Shimo and Skar King; yet, the appearance of this legendary monster left some perplexed after the creature's death in Godzilla: King of the Monsters in 2019.
Wingard supports a well-held belief in the new art book, The Art of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (via ComicBook.com), that the Mothra in Godzilla x Kong isn't the same Mothra Godzilla: King of the Monsters features. The director also remarks on how the 2019 film's version of the character ended up on the surface world. View Wingard's whole response below:
Mothra's reappearance in Godzilla x Kong revealed a major plot hole, although it might be fixed should the Monsterverse feature its biggest villain.
Wingard won not be returning for the Godzilla x Kong follow-up, it has been verified today. Dave Callaham writes this untitled sequel already; no director is attached just yet. Given the early stage of development of the next film after Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, it is unclear what the plot will be or whether Mothra will feature in it. Still, the monster surviving indicates that viewers will most likely witness the legendary Titan once more.
Following almost destroying each other in Godzilla vs. Kong, the huge Titans are back to confront a fresh deadly threat—but this time they are on the same side. Fifth in Warner Bros.' expanding Monsterverse series, Godzilla x Kong will be directed by Adam Wingard.

Looking Deeper into the Monsterverse
"This is Mothra's mother, quite literally. The New Empire's version of Mothra lays the eggs on the surface, and this movie shows She is the guardian of the paths leading to the surface which are vortexes. Thus, potentially, this Titan has access to these vortexes and lay eggs on the surface—as King of The Monsters shows us. She is the first one from original.
This clarifies a bit. Observing what happens with the franchise going forward will be fascinating.
