Who is Alice Eve's Controversial Dr. Carol Marcus from "Star Trek Into Darkness"?
It seems everyone loves Alice Eve, but not her version of Dr. Carol Marcus from Star Trek Into Darkness! If you are a Star Trek fan, you might not even like this new character from the Kelvin Timeline - a parallel universe. We love Dr. Carol, but her original character in the Prime timeline - in "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" was quite different!
How Did They Change Dr. Carol?
You know, the original Dr. Carol - played by Bibi Besch was a regular civilian scientist! She created a pretty amazing device for fixing up planets and stuff, too!
- It's like night and day because the Alice Eve Carol Marcus is way different. They really made it seem like this Dr. Carol is a Starfleet physicist, and she is into weapons too, which is not something we've ever seen before with this character!
- This new version was supposed to be a kind of romantic interest for Chris Pine's Captain Kirk, because this is a different timeline than the older series, which gives J.J. Abrams, the director, some more wiggle room.
What Was Controversial About This New Dr. Carol?
- They had Alice Eve wear lingerie. It became one of the things fans were upset with. There was a bit of a problem: Alice Eve said she has no issue showing off her body, which is her right.
- The problem with the movie is not Alice Eve at all. It is the writing - they didn't make her an individual but like a trophy for men.
- Her story revolves around her father (Admiral Marcus), her relationship with the main character - Captain Kirk, and even her victimhood at the hands of Khan! We don't even see Dr. Carol do much, so it's not so much the actor. This movie's Carol Marcus just isn't all that great, especially when you compare it to the original characters.
Why Was This Such A Big Deal?
- It seems like they have had these ideas about female characters for ages. But it makes people ask this question: Do they think the "Star Trek" universe is about sexualizing female characters to make money or do they see women as equal? We haven't heard anything about what she does in her job, so, sadly, it's almost like Dr. Carol is there for some of that cheap appeal!
- We definitely don't see that much Star Trek Into Darkness focus on Carol doing things on her own. And fans were upset because she felt like a cardboard character made to fit with this more modern movie. The whole movie did better at the box office than the original, so it did do well! It did better at the box office but that didn't make the movie that much better, did it!
I really hope those who make movies will really make women into complex and intriguing characters - because it seems we're only just starting on how to tell female-driven stories! Maybe one day they will tell a story where the audience doesn't care how many inches the actress is. Hopefully, the "Star Trek" Universe will make those big steps!
You know, Alice Eve, is super famous now! You can check out her work in tons of TV series. You should also see "Belgravia."
