Doctor Strange in the MCU: A Powerful, but Incomplete Picture

Doctor Strange is a major player in the MCU, a ridiculously powerful magic-wielder who’s shown off some amazing abilities. However, his movie appearances (starting in 2016 with his first movie, followed by only one sequel to date, followed by some important appearances in crossover movies such as Avengers: Infinity War; although he got “snapped” away before returning in the latter portion of Avengers: Endgame) haven’t fully revealed the extent of his power. Despite having fewer opportunities to demonstrate his complete strength in combat situations, compared to his comic counterpart; the MCU’s Strange remains one of the strongest heroes!

That shorter MCU timeline, the number of movies and storylines; really doesn’t show Strange's full capabilities compared to what is seen in other characters such as Thor, Hulk, or Captain America, and doesn’t provide that amount of opportunities for displaying the full scope of his abilities.

Doctor Strange in Marvel Comics: The Sorcerer Supreme's Vast Arsenal

Doctor Strange has been a major Marvel Comics player since 1963 (debuting in Strange Tales #110)! This means decades to build an immensely powerful and diverse magic arsenal; making it clear why these comics are known for their intensely creative character designs. His storyline largely mirrors the MCU version; the road to becoming the Sorcerer Supreme, even dealing with challenges that leave other Marvel heroes entirely out of their depth! He routinely tackles impossible problems, going toe-to-toe against major deities, other-dimensional forces and some extremely challenging entities! The variety of opponents, challenges and problems is vast; spanning many years. These challenges allow these vast powers to truly show its strengths! The range and potential outcomes involved are what make these kinds of comics appealing to certain groups of audience members, specifically the ones who like magical conflicts, which Doctor Strange is very popular for featuring.

Strange’s powers are rooted in sorcery and that allows immense possibilities and opportunities! He's a master, capable of summoning the power of godlike other-dimensional entities – almost countless. He’s also skilled in wielding super-powerful magical artifacts – showing immense prowess and precision that others simply could not do without years of intense study.

Doctor Strange's Comic Book Abilities – a List of Strengths

Here’s what he can do in comics and this is what truly makes Doctor Strange incredibly powerful compared to most Marvel characters:

Eldritch Invocations: Accessing the abilities of powerful cosmic entities – like the Vishanti! These powers practically match his chosen being – sometimes resulting in god-like strength and the ability to effortlessly engage powerful individuals in a direct conflict. A significant boost to Strange’s powers; enabling him to counter some truly, incredibly challenging opponents.
Eye of Agomotto: An amazing artifact capable of piercing through any illusion; this includes those who use powerful shape-shifting and illusion capabilities. The purity makes infernal entities and those beings who exist outside the natural order; particularly dangerous and very difficult opponents much weaker!
Chronokinesis: Time manipulation abilities are immense. It makes sense that these powers would greatly benefit Doctor Strange. He casually controls and trivializes catastrophic events (cleaving of the Earth!), even time travel, making Doctor Strange incredibly potent. It is important to highlight this: he doesn’t even need the Time Stone for time control in this narrative!
Functional Immortality: After overcoming Death itself he became functionally immortal. He won't get diseases or age– essentially extending his lifespan to around 600 years. However, he’s still killable, and he needs typical needs such as eating and drinking, to stay alive, so the strengths do have some obvious limitations.
Flight and Magical Shields: His enchanted Cloak of Levitation is iconic – offering defense alongside flight, almost identical to what's seen in the MCU. Although, the cloak does not provide complete protection and might itself get damaged, or outright destroyed; which are notable weaknesses.
Energy Manipulation: These ranged attacks vary widely! They can sometimes even obliterate planets! It really depends on which powers he summons; this adds tremendous possibilities in any battle! And these usually appear instantly; not needing an incantation. But these sometimes only hit with minor damage in various circumstances; which really depends on the specific scenario in play.
Astral Projection: Entering that Astral Plane removes various physical needs. And it grants other crazy abilities – cosmic travel, invisibility. It makes his power set way more varied than in the MCU version. Yet, the weakness here is this renders the body vulnerable to physical attacks; adding critical limitations.
Psychic Abilities: His telekinesis and teleportation are intense– even capable of other dimensional travel and these powers could completely affect mind manipulation; easily overpowered even extremely powerful psyonics such as the Scarlet Witch! Another huge strength that provides greater versatility in the battlefield compared to most Marvel heroes.
Banishment: He can send opponents to different dimensions, but these kinds of powers only work on people considerably weaker than himself, which shows another unique ability only really possessed by extremely powerful Marvel heroes.

It's noteworthy that both versions also possess those skills such as conjuration and transmutation. But those tend to not get utilized during intense high-stakes fights. The Mirror Dimension however is a unique MCU creation, it’s never utilized in Marvel comics.

The MCU's Doctor Strange is largely accurate compared to its Marvel Comics counterpart! Using the Darkhold against Scarlet Witch (leaving that infamous third eye, that mark upon his soul) is reminiscent of comic storylines; this added mark does have those implied longer-term effects. Although this film clearly displays that amazing skill at powerful magical defense, this lacks some key and defining aspects found in its Marvel Comics version. It lacks that same ability to summon specific abilities through invocation that made these skills and spells so incredibly varied and capable of unexpected results! His major victories rely largely on artifacts – that awesome Time Stone and the Darkhold.

MCU vs. Comics: The Verdict on Power Levels

The MCU’s Doctor Strange has enormous potential. He will display even more immense capabilities and strength! The more limited MCU narrative might mean his ultimate power levels are unseen for a while. His most impressive MCU feats largely relied on artifacts such as the Time Stone or the Darkhold! Marvel Comics Strange demonstrates vastly superior strength in many other ways. That Time Stone-independent time control? That's hugely impressive and this skill is just one major example! The Eye of Agomotto in comics vastly overshadows its MCU counterpart.

However, Doctor Strange’s use of the Runes of Kof-Kol is amazing! We've yet to see those spells' full potential; this creates amazing possibilities for the future, and further enhances what he has currently displayed. His upcoming appearances in Avengers movies (and a potentially unannounced Doctor Strange 3) could potentially change this completely and add even more to the mythos surrounding this powerful mage. It’s also interesting to imagine the sheer potential scale involved.
