Disney's Alien Ride: A Spooky History of Theme Park Terror

Disney's Terrifying Alien Ride

If you were a Theme Park enthusiast in the '90s, you might remember an incredibly spooky and out-of-place ride at Disney World!

What Was the Extraterrestrial Alien Encounter Ride About?

At the Magic Kingdom, in Tomorrowland, there once was a Disney World ride, themed around aliens, but with a real sci-fi horror vibe, much different from the classic Disney family-friendly rides! It was designed as a theatre attraction, with a scary alien, similar to the Xenomorph alien in the Alien Movies, that broke free of its containment. Guests who got to Ride were placed into rotating seating surrounding a stage. But the experience wasn't all terrifying; the dark humour made some moments more bearable!

Who Created the Ride?

This Disney theme park ride was one of a kind. The story itself, designed by George Lucas, creator of the Star Wars galaxy, was unique and thrilling!

What Was the Alien Ride Based on?

Initially, this ride had another theme. Originally called "Nostromo" after the ship from the 1979 Alien movie, it would have showcased a Xenomorph alien, the menacing creature of Alien creature! But it never actually made it out!

Why Did Disney World Close the Alien Ride?

It seems odd that such an amazing ride, with such great creativity behind it, would ever close down! But Disney ultimately had to close it. The ride's terrifying atmosphere wasn't something most families were comfortable with! There was a need to make it more Disney family-friendly, with something new. In the end, Disney went with Lilo & Stitch ride!

Why Isn't There an Alien Ride At Disney World?

This was a tough call for Disney, and many wonder why the classic Alien franchise, based on an R-rated movie series, couldn't be brought to life. It wasn't a decision made out of dislike of the Alien movie series. Instead, Disney opted to keep their focus on family-friendly content, given the nature of a Sci-Fi horror movie with frightening scenes. This, despite the creative vision from George Lucas. The rides that they've released at Disney Hollywood Studios and other theme parks are typically more inspired by PG-rated films and classic Movies, with only a few PG-13 movies inspiring them.

How Can I See an Alien Ride at a Theme Park?

You can! While you won't be able to experience Disney's "Alien Ride", fans have options! Keep your eye out for attractions around the world at other Disney World theme park attractions that might be a good alternative. However, if you want a taste of that incredible experience, a visit to Disney Hollywood Studios to experience the Great Movie Ride is your best bet.
