Everything Arriving On Disney+ In July 2024
Disney+ features a lot of new shows and movies every month, but July is particularly full of new additions. There are new National Geographic specials and documentaries, the premiere of a new Descendants movie, and the continuing debut season of The Acolyte. This means there are a lot of shows to choose from.
Some of the shows include new Disney Channel original TV series, so that families can rewatch episodes of their favorite shows. There’s also been a huge resurgence in interest in animated movies like Inside Out because of Inside Out 2 landing in theaters.
The Best Movies And Shows Arriving On Disney+ This Month
The influx of serial programming in July follows a strong month for June. The most popular content on Disney+ last month included the animated kids’ series Bluey and the Star Wars series The Acolyte.
Disney, however, has also experienced continued success with musical specials and concerts like Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour, which remains one of the biggest pieces of media for Disney+ as the real-life tour continues around the world.
Sharkfest (2024) - July 1
Sharkfest is a yearly event for National Geographic’s television networks. This year, a big chunk of the content produced for it will also be available for Disney+, helping to kick off the summer season for subscribers in the Northern Hemisphere. Seven different items will be added, all on the first of the month, to kick off the event.
This year, most of those are one-off specials instead of multiple episodes of an existing series. That means, despite there being so much shark-related content, there’s a variety of it. Most of the specials focus on how sharks behave or interact with humans in specific regions, like Shark Beach with Anthony Mackie, which takes the Marvel Cinematic Universe star to the Gulf of Mexico and his home state of Louisiana to talk with scientists about shark behavior and habitats.
The Acolyte (2024) - Weekly Episodes
Disney+ is the official Streaming home for all of the Star Wars content, from the previously released movies to the new television shows. Because Disney+ keeps adding new shows to the Star Wars universe, the timeline keeps expanding for those fascinated by the on-screen lore. The Acolyte helps to expand the franchise even more.
The official Disney summary of the series says that it features an investigation into a crime spree that pits a Jedi Master against a warrior from his past, and to avoid any continuity issues with the other series on Disney+, the show is set at the start of the known Star Wars timeline. With a huge cast boasting the likes of Amandla Stenberg, Lee Jung-jae, Manny Jacinto, Dafne Keen, and Jodie Turner-Smith, the show has expanded Star Wars lore and prompted a lot of discussion about history in the fandom.
Bluey Minisodes (2024) - July 3
Bluey is already one of the most popular modern cartoons for kids and families, so it makes sense that Disney+ would want to increase the number of subscribers with young children watching the show. Adding new “minisodes” to the streamer when kids are out of school is a great way to do that.
The series follows a young dog and her family as they experience everyday life and imaginative adventures. This marks only the first of three batches of minisodes set to premiere over the next year. There will be seven in this batch: “Burger Dog,” “Bingo 3000,” “Muffin Unboxing,” “Letter,” “Hungry,” “Three Pigs,” and “Animals.” Another batch of episodes will launch later in 2024 and the third will launch in 2025. All of the episodes will eventually air on Disney Channel and Disney Jr. as well.
The Descendants Franchise (2024) - July 12
The first three of Disney’s Descendants movies were huge hits for the Disney Channel and are already available on Disney+. This month, however, Disney+ adds the sing-a-long versions of the movies, which will certainly delight kids who want to learn the songs but might not delight parents who are tired of hearing “Rotten to the Core” already.
The bigger get for the Descendants movie series is that the fourth movie is joining Disney+ just as it premieres on television as well. Descendants: The Rise of Red wasn’t a sure thing for Disney. After the death of Cameron Boyce and stars like Dove Cameron, Sofia Carson, and Booboo Stewart moving on from the Disney Channel, it wasn’t clear if Disney would be able to make another movie. The fourth installment will focus on some new faces with Cinderella’s daughter and the Queen of Hearts’ daughter taking a trip back in time to change the fate of the world. It also, however, will bring back former villain kid Uma as the new headmaster of the school that has been at the center of every movie, giving something familiar for previous fans and something new for new audience members.
Angels In The Outfield (1994)
In the mid-’90s, family films were a bit obsessed with the slightly supernatural and fantastic. There were the likes of Casper, A Kid In King Arthur’s Court, and Angels In The Outfield. Some of these have gone on to be annual family favorites, like Casper, but others have largely been lost alongside VHS tapes. Angels In The Outfield had been one of those, but now, it will be available to stream on Disney+. The 1994 family movie is actually a remake of a 1951 film.
The movie sees a young boy pray that his favorite baseball team, the California Angels, could finally win their series. Much to his surprise, actual angels are assigned to make his prayers a reality. While the movie is a little cheesy, and definitely a product of its time, it also features a who’s who of actors who are now household names. Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Danny Glover, Christopher Lloyd, Matthew McConaughey, Dermot Mulroney, Adrien Brody, and Neal McDonough are all featured in the ensemble cast. Those who have the Hulu and Disney+ bundle will also have access to shows like The Bear. With so many new series on Disney+ in July, there is a huge variety of content for subscribers to watch.
