Will Deadpool and Wolverine be returning to the MCU?
Finally gracing the silver screen in "Deadpool & Wolverine," the much awaited team of Deadpool and Wolverine unites Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds as the venerable heroes. But with the Fox X-Men universe and the MCU successfully merged, one wonders: Will this be our last view of them?
From Comics to the Big Screen: Deadpool's Journey
Originally appearing in Marvel Comics in 1991, the beloved anti-hero Deadpool first won over readers with his sarcastic humor and fourth-wall breaking antics. Beyond the pages, the character's appeal resulted in Ryan Reynolds' big-screen debut in 2009 as Wade Wilson. Although Deadpool's signature wit was muted by a sewn-up mouth, which drew criticism, Reynolds redeemed himself in 2016 with a standalone "Deadpool" movie set inside the Fox X-men Universe. The success of the character persisted until Disney bought Fox in 2019, so starting a new chapter for Deadpool in the MCU.
"Deadpool & Wolverine": A Farewall or a Milestone?
The premiere of "Deadpool & Wolverine" marks a momentous occasion since it combines two of the most cherished X-Men characters into the Sacred Timeline of the MCU. For mutants, the movie acts as a correct introduction and a link between the two worlds. But given Ryan Reynolds approaching 50 and Hugh Jackman already in his mid-50s, one wonders their future in the MCU. Although their coexistence with Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man and Chris Evans' Captain America was a highlight, Reynolds and Jackman may find it difficult to replay their parts as the MCU moves toward younger stars.
hypothesizing about the future for Deadpool and Wolverine
Like any Marvel Studios effort, Deadpool and Wolverine's future is yet unknown. Reynolds and Jackman have deftly refrained from responding to inquiries on sequel roles and future directions. Although this would irritate fans hoping for a continuation of their narrative, it is expected given the cautious approach the Marvel Cinematic Universe takes toward next projects.
Three possible scenarios: a definitive end, an open door, or future appearances.
Though official confirmation is lacking, Deadpool and Wolverine's future could fall under a few different paths. Offering a fitting farewell and launching them off on a high note, "Deadpool & Wolverine" might be the ending for their tale. On the other hand, the movie might feature an open-ended ending, allowing for next visits. This would give Marvel Studios great freedom for next projects. With particular elements kept under wraps, Deadpool and Wolverine could already be scheduled to feature in next MCU projects.
"Avengers: Secret Wars" — A Possible Crossroads
Marvel Studios' forward-looking approach makes it unlikely for either Jackman or Reynolds to star in any MCU initiative before 2027. But 2027 marks the end of the Multiverse Saga with the grand epic event movie "Avengers: Secret Wars." There are expected to be big crossovers in this movie with cameos from heroes all around the MCU.
A Farewell Final Thought?
Should Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds reprise their roles as Wolverine and Deadpool, "Avengers: Secret Wars" would be the most likely venue for their appearance. Still, given the scope of the movie and the events of "Avengers: Endgame," it also offers a possible chance for their interpretations of the characters to die. While shifting the roles to new variants better suited for the MCU, this could offer a satisfying ending to their journey and a last send-off following "Deadpool & Wolverine."
