Hulu's Carved isn't your average slasher flick. It's a darkly comedic horror movie about a killer pumpkin – and it's as bonkers as it sounds! This film, based on Justin Harding's short film (who also directed the feature!), takes place on Halloween 1993 at Cedar Creek Pioneer Village in Maine. A seriously creepy pumpkin, discovered at a local field; brought into a carving contest which turns out to have deadly consequences; creates a whole Halloween nightmare and showcases that strange and often violent blend of both horror and dark comedy!

Our heroes – Kira (Peyton Elizabeth Lee), her BF Cody (Corey Fogelmanis), Maddie (Sasha Mason), and Shane (Jonah Less), along with Kira's bro Trevor (Wyatt Lindner) and several other unlucky villagers– have to fight to survive. The film follows those incredibly desperate attempts to stay alive; trying to survive a seriously insane killer pumpkin that really can't be easily outwitted! That killer pumpkin turns out to be unexpectedly strong and fast; requiring surprising ingenuity and incredible daring from our heroes.

How Did They Defeat That Freaky Pumpkin? A Last-Ditch Plan

Our main characters, joined by Bill (DJ Qualls, the village manager), Kevin (Marc Sully Saint-Fleur, the groundskeeper), and Barbara (Carla Jimenez, Kira’s friend) hatch an escape plan, eventually involving vehicles. Yet, various issues plague these efforts and many attempts to both survive and outrun this strange and unexpectedly strong killer pumpkin; demonstrating just how intelligent and deadly it is. Unfortunately, attempts to aid one another; creates moments that lead to their own downfall.

Bill and Kevin try to help each other; but end up being killed! The incredibly loud Shane tries getting away with the keys and meets the same fate; killed outright. Things don't end better as even Barbara is killed during a vehicle escape plan involving Clint (Matty Cardarople), whose incredibly high state doesn't allow for quick and effective reaction!

Our heroes however eventually prevail after being forced into several difficult choices, especially after a few members got caught off guard and got easily eliminated by this extremely capable killer pumpkin; Kira, Cody, and Trevor escape; eventually getting to a nearby farm, finding baby pumpkins that they use to lead this killer pumpkin toward its end– crushing it using a tractor. That is intense and unexpectedly brutal, adding another important element to its creative design choices, showing the creative direction taken. Then that ending displays all remaining characters attempting to ensure those deadly offspring also got similarly destroyed. The ending brings about another surprise moment.

Why Is There a Killer Pumpkin?! CLIONYX's Chemical Disaster

It's revealed that CLIONYX’s chemical spill is the reason! During an earlier interview that sets this scene; we eventually understand this key point and discover this previously disastrous event; a train crash resulting in an environmental disaster one year prior which is referenced numerous times in this particular scene. This impacted that local land greatly. The chemicals created mutations. That abnormal pumpkin that Clint found–that massive thing with “eyes” and tendrils–is the ultimate consequence of this disaster! Its numerous deadly offspring imply that this effect affected more areas, demonstrating the consequences inherent within industrial and environmental carelessness, and adding another layer that enhances the overall creative elements that made Carved a memorable piece of work, despite having some strange creative design choices made throughout that scene!

Who Was Targeted By This Sentient Squash? The Pumpkin’s Kill List!

The killer pumpkin isn't random. It deliberately targeted those directly connected to the carving contest!

Wesley (Jackson Kelly): The first victim.
Maddie and Trevor: Contestants.
Shane: The contest host.
Kevin: Another contestant. This is really important, as it demonstrates that he becomes a major recurring target!
Bill: Organized the contest. He’s surprisingly still another big target. And his eventual death makes his initial plans even more tragically futile.
Clint: The person who took that initial, extremely dangerous pumpkin! That is a crucial fact that makes Clint also highly likely to have become targeted.

The only survivor, other than Kira, Cody, and Trevor, is Maddie. She is protected because she used herbicides against it. Barbara’s death was unfortunately due to the escape attempt failing completely – Clint’s driving (and condition!) causes this accidental and untimely demise that ultimately makes Barbara’s story rather tragic; unlike the deaths of others during this Halloween nightmare, as Barbara’s case is truly incidental, showcasing just how truly unlucky some characters ultimately could be; showing that escaping from this killer pumpkin was no easy task and involved even difficult situations that would be almost impossible to overcome easily.

The Final Twist: A Killer Pumpkin’s Legacy!

The ending involves our heroes using a tractor crusher to annihilate both the killer pumpkin and its terrifying offspring. But that isn't the final shot. Clint's decapitated head; displayed along with all the others in that final reveal; features an emerging tendril and adds another chilling moment to the story: another unexpected moment where some kind of pumpkin might potentially return later!

Carved's ending clearly leaves a possible sequel in mind! Was part of the pumpkin still in Clint's head? Did an offspring cleverly hide itself? Either one could result in an insane sequel; perfectly leaving that terrifying pumpkin potentially appearing and attacking later, generating lots of interest in potential future installments. This adds additional mystery which could possibly fuel the momentum of another major plot point, generating massive amounts of intrigue for what is already planned.

Carved successfully blends dark comedy and horror – creating this uniquely creative premise; a genuinely unsettling monster movie; unexpectedly suspenseful; despite being almost ridiculous! That ending provides another major unexpected climax which demonstrates some serious creative intelligence in those overall final scenes. Those surprising moments that ultimately come out only as a result of intelligent storytelling; generating amazing opportunities that only arise as a result of this kind of brilliant writing!
