Captain America 4's Big Adamantium Reveal
Whoa, it looks like Captain America: Brave New World is changing the way the Marvel universe operates, and the X-Men are likely about to get super interesting.
If you're a comic book buff, you're well-aware of Adamantium! You know, the nearly indestructible metal they used for Wolverine's claws. The new MCU timeline takes Adamantium's origin from the comics and turns it into an awesome celestials plot. They're calling this celestials thing "the dead celestial from Eternals," so expect to see a lot more stories about how countries will compete to get their hands on this crazy powerful material. So... how does this affect our beloved Logan, the Wolverine?
Does this New Timeline Change Things for Wolverine?
Now, I hear ya. It looks like Henry Cavill playing Wolverine is kinda out the window (but you'll see why I'm still keeping hope). The problem? If Adamantium doesn't appear until Captain America 4, then we gotta rewind a few steps when it comes to how they make a classic Wolverine! In Deadpool & Wolverine, we meet the "Cavillrine" - the alternate universe version of Wolverine - who's rocking Adamantium claws!
He's smoking cigars, being a total bada and totally doing the whole "arm-reload-a-la-Mission Impossible" thing - but with a kickass Adamantium claw reload! The movie definitely dropped a big hint – it feels pretty certain that this "Cavillrine" is likely a version of Wolverine who is from a future where Adamantium is already out there, so the MCU might have a totally different plan for the most famous X-Men guy.
Could Cavill Still be Wolverine?
Now before you ditch all your hopes, Henry Cavill said in a recent interview that he would not want to step on anyone’s toes by playing a Marvel character that is already established, especially if another actor is doing a great job.
The thing is, there's not exactly another actor playing Wolverine in the MCU – it's all speculation about who it could be. If they end up going in a different direction, we still have the potential to see a new (yet familiar?) face of Wolverine and a whole different timeline for Logan. However, after "Deadpool & Wolverine", the "Cavillrine", and Captain America: Brave New World, a different story could be emerging about the world’s most famous X-Men member.
Wait a Minute, Who's Taking Over The Wolverine Role Now?
You think that Hugh Jackman's already got all that Wolverine business in the bag, right? You think we'll just see a recycled “Wolvering" story? Or will the MCU decide to revamp the whole thing? They're still on the hunt for a perfect Logan, so, honestly, we're waiting on that news and seeing what wild character transformations might be headed to our screens.
We do have "Deadpool 3," where they’ve mentioned finding the "true" Wolverine, and if it’s anything like the “Deadpool & Wolverine” movie we saw recently (totally mind-blowing! All those alternate universe X-Men?! I couldn't stop laughing! ), I'm super excited for the next Logan-style chaos!
The MCU and The Future of Wolverine: Who's Next in the X-Men Family?
The MCU has big plans for the X-Men! The future for Marvel's most popular mutant characters (yes, I know you are all ready for them! They even started with that "X-Men '97" series on Disney+) is just starting, especially since they finally have their own series at Marvel, and the Adamantium reveal only gets things moving.
We've got to look at it this way - maybe there’s still some possibility for Cavill if it happens after this "Deadpool" and “Captain America" business, and maybe if they are thinking about the "Cavillrine" in the timeline it’s only as a one-off! It’s the future! They might come up with some incredible new ways to incorporate this wild, claw-wielding character in this superhero universe. And even though the news about Adamantium changes the rules of the game a little bit - one thing’s certain – there’s a ton of fun waiting for all of us when those mutants arrive.
