The Beetlejuice Main Cast: Then and Now

Alec Baldwin as Adam Maitland: From Quirky Ghost to 30 Rock Icon

Alec Baldwin plays Adam Maitland—one of the deceased couple who haunts their own house, discovering that they are now ghosts; completely different from his later portrayals that emphasized the actor’s stronger, more assertive presence. In Beetlejuice, he was an incredibly kind yet quirky individual.  This early role feels completely unexpected compared to his far more familiar personality!

His Emmy-winning performance in 30 Rock (as Jack Donaghy) and that insane SNL Trump impersonation—are widely viewed and made his name even bigger among far larger demographics than his work in Beetlejuice. His extremely varied, critically successful work makes for an insanely talented performer capable of many varied character interpretations; all completely different roles spanning various genres. This demonstrates just how talented an actor is able to change their very portrayal with respect to the requirements of that specific role, as demonstrated within his vastly impressive filmography!

Geena Davis as Barbara Maitland: From The Fly to Action Star and Beyond

Geena Davis plays Barbara Maitland—Adam's equally sweet and similarly deceased partner who also now must try and solve some issues in her previous house after the original death. In Beetlejuice, she was quite understated and played against type: This is in stark contrast to her subsequent tougher, more independent and successful roles.

Davis became a notable action star in the '90s (co-starring with her ex-husband Renny Harlin), a far departure from many typical portrayals of that genre. That amazing portrayal as Thelma in Thelma & Louise (she got a Best Actress Oscar nomination!) makes that aspect entirely clear!  She's now remembered for vastly diverse, and critically important roles including some well-remembered performances across various TV shows and across vastly varied genres!

Michael Keaton as Betelgeuse: From Everyman to Iconic, Unhinged Ghost!

Michael Keaton's Betelgeuse, “the ghost with the most,” is unforgettable. He's outrageous!  This very different character played in stark contrast to most of Keaton’s prior performances; most characters focused on his far more grounded roles that emphasizes a simpler individual; but Betelgeuse, shows just how powerful those differences really are.

Keaton was deeply involved in designing Betelgeuse’s look, proving the massive and unexpected creative freedom the directors could've had on set for such early film productions! It completely highlights the intensity within early collaborations. That unique portrayal completely highlights Keaton’s enormous ability as an actor and made him a legend after his extremely memorable performances as Batman. Yet he's done amazing things in very serious dramas like Spotlight;  and the incredibly dark comedic portrayal shown through his excellent performance as the titular character in Birdman earned him another Oscar nomination!

Winona Ryder as Lydia Deetz: From Goth Teen to Cult Icon

This role made Winona Ryder a star! She plays Lydia – a goth teen capable of seeing the supernatural; and even more importantly her acceptance of what these various experiences actually meant – showing the surprising yet very common aspects about acceptance and family issues that have created significant and incredibly popular reception among other audiences. This is entirely fitting; and highlights her abilities and character portrayal of these various darker themes – something Ryder excels in throughout her impressive work which includes many critically acclaimed movies and TV shows such as HeathersBram Stoker's DraculaAlien: Resurrection, and even Stranger Things.

Jeffrey Jones as Charles Deetz: From Ferris Bueller's Nemesis to Beetlejuice's Deadbeat Dad

This deadbeat father made Charles Deetz, one of Beetlejuice’s less flashy and interesting but critically very important character because he plays a far less showy and understated, yet surprisingly fascinating character and remains somewhat memorable due to his complete opposite reaction against those other incredibly memorable character choices. Jeffrey Jones is primarily remembered for portraying Principal Ed Rooney in Ferris Bueller's Day Off, however his incredible success is truly visible through his various appearances across film.

Catherine O'Hara as Delia Deetz: From SCTV to Schitt's Creek's Iconic Moira

Catherine O’Hara’s varied performances and her incredible achievements across multiple genres, highlight just how significant her role as Delia Deetz was – another example where Burton's genius in selecting appropriate and effective character casting choices had paid off handsomely! Delia Deetz is only one of several varied, equally iconic roles. Think those equally outrageous roles in the Home Alone films or that perfectly memorable Moira Rose in Schitt's Creek! Her extremely effective roles emphasize a strong personality and unique character, each wildly different and memorable!

Beetlejuice has a lot of other awesome actors too, which really makes that overall cinematic experience significantly more impactful! There are well-known stars like Glenn Shadix (who also worked with Winona Ryder and Tim Burton on other productions!),  Sylvia Sidney (a 1930s Hollywood legend) and even Dick Cavett (playing himself!). These actors really are quite important to the supporting roles.

Also appearing were less famous actors, however no less memorable actors: These include actors such as Maree CheathamSusan KellermannTony CoxAdelle LutzAnnie McEnroe, and Patrice Martinez.   Their contributions really create an amazing environment and create the context in which some really brilliant moments appear;  those unexpected and hilarious situations would never be as good without such stellar actors!
