Why would Avengers 5 drop Kang as villain?
With Kang dropped as the villain, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is preparing for a different path for Avengers 5, so maybe changing the Multiverse Saga. Although this is a major change, Marvel has ways to gently explain it such that the momentum of the story is preserved.
Rocky MCU Start from Kang
Up to now, Kang The Conqueror has had a rather disappointing role in the MCU. Though a major threat in the comics, his early appearances in Loki and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania did not present him as the powerful villain he ought to be. Introduced and swiftly killed in Loki, a variant known as He Who Remains, Kang's multiversal threat was established but his actual power was understated. Scott Lang and Hope van Dyne swiftly foiled Kang's grandiose villainy in Quantumania as well. Though intimidating, his looks lacked the impact required for a Thanos-style threat.
MCU Firing of Jonathan Majors Clarified
Originally cast as Kang, Jonathan Majors, the actor has had major legal problems that resulted in his leaving the MCU. Allegations surfaced in March 2023, leading to court cases and finally a guilty verdict for a third degree misdemeanor assault in December 2023. This result caused Marvel to cut Majors off from the series, so ending his Kang run.
How Loki Already Aranges an Easy Out for Marvel on Kang
Fascinatingly, Loki season 2 offers Marvel a handy story outlet to cover Kang's absence. The season brings Victor Timely, another Kang variant, who is shown as a subdued scientist instead of a villain, Timely is portrayed as a character seeking atonement by his real love of science and final sacrifice to assist Loki and the TVA restore the timeline. Season 2's ending leaves the responsibility of overseeing Kang variants to the TVA, now under fresh administration and conscious of Kang's importance. This lets the MCU just drop Kang's narrative at that point, devoid of more development.
Who might replace Kang?
The MCU has a great range of villains fit for the Avengers' next challenge even with Kang's leaving. Introduced in Eternals, the Celestials have a great threat based on their strong presence. Hinted at in WandaVision, Mephisto offers a striking villain choice. Even more strong antagonists are upcoming movies like Fantastic Four, with Galactus and Dr. Doom.
Avengers 5: A New Route
With Avengers 5's direction veering away from Kang, the MCU presents the exciting possibility of presenting a new villain for the heroes to contend with. This shift guarantees the continuous development of the MCU by letting the story explore fresh narratives and introduce new dangers.
