Attack on Titan Live-Action: Did It Miss the Mark?

The beloved anime series Attack on Titan is super popular. You probably have watched it or know someone who loves the crazy twists and turns, epic fights with giant monsters called Titans, but this series is much bigger than a normal TV series!

When it came time to see it in live action it might not have quite had the same impact, however.

The Live Action Movies:

The big story took a different approach when these movies, based on Hajime Isayama’s incredible manga came out back in 2015, there were big changes. If you haven't seen them they're worth a quick watch!

However, a few aspects changed up the series so it wouldn't have the same magic and epic feeling!

Major Changes!

What looks to be pretty cool, and a great thing about these big budget projects, is that audiences get to meet new, intriguing characters that the writer, Isayama didn't create for the original Manga!

One thing that really stands out from this set of films was the addition of the character "Shikishima!" There's so much to think about when you dive into what this character had! Not only was he a really big deal to the film. However, Shikishima is totally original and was created by the director!

Who Was Shikishima?

The writers created an intriguing role with Shikishima and gave the movie an incredibly interesting take on a world of giant Titans!

  • He was a top member of the "Scout Regiment!"
  • He could have been seen as an incredible version of the beloved "Levi Ackerman."! But instead, Shikishima replaced even more, he's more like a stand-in, playing the roles of three characters.

What would happen to the manga story without Levi, Reiner and "Beast Titan"? It’s truly one that fans would love to see but it seems, there wasn't enough time or budget!

Fans who really enjoy Attack On Titan know just how critical their parts were, but with the creation of this character, these iconic players never appeared, making "Shikishima the new, fresh figure in this alternate universe.

An Alternative Storyline With Major Twists!

Fans might know these iconic movies that try to replicate the success of Attack On Titan, and might be wondering just how they do it!

  • Shikishima is seen in "Attack on Titan Part 1. He ends up as one of the main characters and fans of this version are a little stunned by how the writers and directors of this movie went against the original, making these live-action versions incredibly interesting!

With the change to Attack on Titan these Movie changes, took it to a new world and that's evident in their choice to completely alter some key aspects.

Let's say that a new and refreshing world in the Movies does some twists to take this on a journey.

  • Shikishima in these "Attack On Titan movies is an integral character!
  • The movies replaced Levi Ackerman and also Reiner.
  • It may sound wild, and maybe something a fan would do, but "Shikishima" was even meant to be Eren's brother! The directors gave the fans a real twist here!

These changes are all really surprising! The movie versions went into the heart of "Attack on Titan and brought a change to one of its core ideas and Characters.

The writers might have gotten some interesting details that those familiar with Attack On Titan, which they could pull from, and the series wasn't as huge when the movies were released.

A Wild Adventure!

There's another detail to add, that makes this new world of "Attack on Titan", even crazier.

  • Shikishima is romantically tied to Mikasa and ends up being someone that causes "Eren a great deal of jealousy!
  • The series gives us a whole new dynamic between some of these characters!

Another character to add! Who looks so different, that is, the "Colossal Titan" has a huge difference to what you might have expected, a shocking and entertaining role change for this icon of Attack On Titan!

  • It's one of those moves that could really get fans' heads spinning,
  • The "Colossal Titan" in these live action movies wasn't on the "Scout Regiment" at all! He turned into "Director of the Military Police! "

A Shocking Twist!

The whole movie, the most interesting villain is revealed, but also might just have viewers wanting to explore the original story, just to see all of the original details.

  • "Shikishima" has this mission that seems like a grand one for a world with so many problems. That is, to really try to break down the walls, because that is just the move to help this civilization truly defend itself!

That is truly some bold choices from those who took on Attack On Titan!

It really emphasizes that no one was really going to match the sheer scale and breadth of the original Manga's story with the big changes!

A Different Future

Fans may have some mixed reactions as to how it went.

What might be the most powerful message, that a series can learn about is not just going out to try to make a big, superhero movie or series from your favorite books or shows! The filmmakers had so many other options as they brought these massive Titans to life. Even if the plot seemed a little questionable, those who went to watch it were given something that gave these terrifying monsters so much life on screen. It appears a lot was learned.

So maybe a great approach would be for the series to make the move! As audiences have seen from other television series with some incredible visuals, such as "House of the Dragon" and "One Piece." There's a new possibility that could work out as a series to see if "Attack On Titan gets another go around. While the world loves seeing movies. Maybe they could pull a page from those hit shows to find success.

It turns out there have been some great teLevision series adaptations and it is really a unique genre of television to see unfold.

But, this has created a conversation for "Attack on Titan".

The "Game of Thrones" series might not have had such a great finale but that doesn't take away from its impact and Attack On Titan also shared that level of quality, a unique take, and the possibility to truly leave a mark for fans!

It looks like we may be in for some exciting times ahead with more stories and potentially Live-Action versions! Until then, fans will want to see what’s next, as we see some great, exciting adaptations! You never know! It could mean the Anime gets a whole new spin!
