A Bloody Tale of Survival: The American Primeval Story

‘American Primeval’ Sets Premiere Date On Netflix, First-Look Images Reveal Kim Coates, Lucas Neff Castings Image

Netflix's official synopsis captures its dark tone beautifully. They claim this is “America...1857. Up is down, pain is everywhere, innocence and tranquility are losing the battle to hatred and fear. Peace is the shrinking minority, and very few possess grace — even fewer know compassion. There is no safe haven in these brutal lands, and only one goal matters: survival. American Primeval is a fictionalized dramatization and examination of the violent collision of culture, religion, and community as men and women fight and die to keep or control this land.” Those aren’t flowery descriptions.  It is going to be brutal.

Taylor Kitsch’s Isaac is at the forefront: This man's history is shrouded in shadows and seeks hope.  Betty Gilpin's Sara Rowell is another key figure who desperately tries to seek stability and safety, along with her son, crossing the dangerous territories to seek a much needed better place to begin their life afresh.  And from that synopsis, these aren’t those classic cowboy stories with neat conclusions and a sense of moral satisfaction at the end. The characters find themselves battling the brutality and cruelty all around them – the raw violence associated with frontier expansion and the consequences related.

Netflix’s strategy behind this production is completely obvious; and it's smart, too. The immense success of Yellowstone and other critically successful recent Westerns proves that this particular genre can and does resonate with huge numbers of viewers.  American Primeval clearly attempts to deliver a unique, extremely gritty twist, bringing that sense of high-octane violence and suspense within its story’s narrative! A darker interpretation than what's often presented, giving that feeling of a survival-focused dramatic conflict, using the themes present at this unique time and setting; with immense creative effort behind these specific story details. That same focus and creative attention also extend into all the visual aspects portrayed! The recent release of  Territory (another western; set in Australia and starring Anna Torv) is a unique alternative yet also shows the immense success these kinds of projects produce and its impact and influence upon viewers everywhere. It shows exactly how Netflix is attempting to capture similar levels of that same enormous critical acclaim by introducing this intense new production.
