Hal Jordan is on Oa and in the fight of his life in Jeremy Adams, Xermánico, Romulo Fajardo Jr., and Dave Sharpe's Green Lantern #12. New commander of the Green Lantern Corps, Lord Premier Thaaros, has exposed his betrayal in seizing the United Planets and is arresting Hal and the rest of the Resistance Corps using loyalists. Along the way, Green Lantern is almost taken out by Thaaros' enforcers and must flee. Star Sapphire fortunately helps Hal and sends both of them back to Earth.
Thaaros is enraged that Hal got away even if the resistance is subdued. Thaaros muses over the threat Jordan poses, particularly given he owns a Green Lantern Power Ring apart from his Green Lantern Corps, after punishing some of his troops. Thaaros decides to stop Jordan and calls Earth to personally talk with Amanda Waller after refusing to let anybody else access the Emotional Spectrum. Waller and Thaaros talk about the matter and find that Thaaros has been supporting Waller in her schemes to halt the metahumans of the DC Universe. Thaaros calls in favor and orders Waller to bring Hal Jordan to him. Thaaros will enable Waller's efforts on Earth to keep on unabated in return. Carol Ferris has meanwhile escorted Hal back to his trailer to aid in his recovery from the fight. During a little heart-to--heart, the two at last tell one another they feel something. But the entrance of Amanda Waller's Suicide Squad—who have come to deliver Green Lantern—ruines their sweet moment.
Shortly the Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths, the United Planets reinstated the lost Corps leaders, the Guardians of the Universe. Thaaros started implementing general reforms, including Sector 2814's quarantining (which harmed the Green Lanterns of Earth). After his first mission under Thaaros concluded with the Sinestro Corps Central Power Battery exploding, Hal left the Corps claiming the life of Jordan's friend Kilowog. Though he was not aware that the commander of the United Planets was actually behind it, Green Lantern found elements of Thaaros' plans after creating a new ring for himself from the residual willpower from an old Manhunter armor. Hal headed straight for Oa to find out what was going on with the attacks on the Emotional Spectrum after at last breaking out of Earth's orbit and discovered that the Corps had changed significantly under Thaaros' leadership. Green Lantern swore to stop Thaaros after learning he was responsible for the recent devastation of many Central Power Batteries. Another conspiracy, one developed by Amanda Waller, was developing simultaneously on Earth. Waller started preparations to destroy the planet of metahumans after acquiring tools from the Council of Light. Waller was made head of the Bureau of Sovereignty after waiting and manipulating from the shadows, therefore acquiring great authority. With more authority than ever, Waller established a new Suicide Squad and used it to seize control of the island nation of Gamorra and started designing a massive jail.
At this point, Absolute Power has been hinted at for months; fans have seen fascinating glimpses of the Justice League members under attack. But this marks the first time we have seen Waller truly endangering the life of DC's heroes from bluster and threatening behavior. She is starting with Green Lantern, naturally, so she may maintain the peace she established with the United Planets. Waller just needs to present Green Lantern on a silver platter to obtain the least amount of interference she could possibly want.
Waller still needs to gather Failsafe and the Brainiac Queen to create her Trinity of Evil, hence she does not yet have all the components she needs to bring the earth to heel. Still, this is the greatest hostility she has showed a hero since beginning her campaign absent them. She is delivering Suicide Squad members like King Shark in addition to waves of Task Force X agents after Green Lantern. This degree of power reveals just how severe Waller is ready to go to bring down the heroes of Earth. Green Lantern still carries his Power Ring, thankfully, but as Absolute Power teasers have indicated, Hal will soon lose those abilities. In a universe where Amanda Waller has all the cards an army like the one she dispatched after Green Lantern will be more than sufficient to capture fugitive heroes. Hal sees at the end of Green Lantern #12 just a tiny taste of the nightmare Waller is about to bring to the DC Universe, one that will only get worse as she steals every metahumans' talents.
Hal Jordan is employed in addressing insurmount challenges. Green Lantern has fewer and less hiding places, though, since Amanda Waller follows him on Earth and Thaaros watches the stars. As long as he has his Power Ring, he might have a shot; but, it will be really difficult if Waller deprives him of his powers. Should the Justice Leaguer be reckless, he could find himself arrested by the Suicide Squad and handed directly to Thaaros for whatever twisted agenda the maniac has for Hal.
