id="a-history-with-saled-s-lot">A History with Salem’s Lot:It's a classic story that focuses on Ben Mears, a character who is on a journey. You will find that in all the different forms. However, there are also those classic parts of this story and the vampire, Kurt Barlow and the demonic figure, Richard Straker, along with their own unique terror in a special location, "Jerusalem’s Lot!"
Max, the movie studio really looked to expand on this incredible book but also brought a story in a two hour span, so they made sure to give us the highlights that made Salem’s Lot so well-loved.
Big Changes:
The new Max film doesn't stay true to the original story, there were some real notable adjustments.
- "Ben Mears's Backstory"- A main change was the story about his early days! While in the book, Ben Mears had a challenging childhood! His mom couldnt take care of him, but instead was put into a house for a time where the local residents just weren't good. However, the Max movie made this part of the character even more somber, where the real tragedy of his story comes from when he loses both of his parents!
- The "Marsten House"- You will definitely remember the creepy Marsten House and while in the "Salem’s Lot" novel, Ben Mears had a strange encounter when he was just a boy and made a trip back in his youth and the movie removed the entire concept and took out any elements about "Marsten" history.
- Susan Norton’s Family- A few twists were made to the relationship between Susan Norton and the family. "Anne" still is featured but it is her that becomes Barlow's assistant in the Max adaptation as a terrifying twist, which may remind fans of "The Sopranos.", which brings a haunting addition!
- "Dr. Cody"- A surprising twist is that Doctor Jimmy Cody in the Max version of this book adaptation became a woman!
- "Matt's Heart Attack-", One of the events that gives audiences more depth about the danger surrounding "Jerusalem’s Lot," A story about a "heart attack" for "Matt", doesn't appear at all! The ending still makes him meet a grisly end, just in a more interesting way.
- Father Callahan’s Demise. A key figure in "Salem’s Lot," his ending gets flipped in the Max release, The movie cuts the open ended way he leaves town. In Max's version. Callahan is tragically killed by "Barlow".
- "Mark's Ending"- Mark, one of the central figures of this book is a friend to Danny and the movie gave a more intimate friendship between the pair!
- "Susan Norton- The final showdown had to happen! But not in "Salem’s Lot" but at a new location, the "Drive In." This isn't too far off, as this location gets used in the book as well but with another scene and a place where Barlow takes cover as the vampires retreat into these vehicles and "Anne" steps up as she is a great threat. "Mark" is the one to actually defeat "Barlow," but before it is over he is given another chance to defeat "Susan!"
- Ben and Mark’s Fate In "Salem's Lot," the book concludes with "Ben" and "Mark." as the final survivors who went on a mission to defeat the vampires. Their plan to burn down "Jerusalem’s Lot" wasn't featured but there could be some big implications! Max is possibly setting this up for a new installment in the story.
Even with all of these differences, this film brings the magic and heartbreaking moments that made Salem’s Lot so terrifying and unforgettable.
