The big twist in Iron Man 3 involves Sir Ben Kingsley’s Mandarin, a feared Spider-Man supervillain who has appeared in Marvel Comics! Sadly, the "Iron Man 3 twist", which focused on a character played by Ben Kingsley as the “Mandarin," was not who audiences thought. In the twist, the Mandarin character was a mere actor used by the main antagonist. Many people felt let down.
This was an iconic moment in the Iron Man 3, where the iconic Iron Man appears to make a move to retire, after deciding to move away from being a Marvel Cinematic Universe hero. But in Avengers: Age of Ultron, he is back! There was no clear attempt at this "retirement," which led to criticism.
Fans felt Jane Foster had a limited role in this film. Jane Foster role felt limited, as she was reduced to a plot device to help carry forward the main story. Thor: The Dark World villains were also very unimpressive, which took away from a very strong, and well-received, Marvel Phase 2.
Thanos appeared as a central antagonist in Guardians of the Galaxy (GOTG). Many argued he overshadows Ronan the Accuser in GOTG. With this being his first full appearance as the Thanos MCU, the big bad villain got a lot of screen time, taking attention away from another intriguing villain in the Marvel Phase 2 movies.
A lot of fans who love Marvel Phase 2, point to this movie! The use of Ultron MCU and how he quickly ends the story as a main antagonist left a mark, as it could have provided for more opportunities for MCU film criticism in later releases. The film also included a surprise post-credits appearance from Thanos, and one which didn't have as many good reactions from viewers because it lacked depth. It was odd given the way it was framed in Thanos Age of Ultron post-credits, a movie where it was heavily hinted he was working behind the scenes, but those details ended up not playing a part in the narrative of the film!
