Mark Margolis, a truly legendary actor, recently passed away. He trained with the best, learning method acting under Stella Adler and Lee Strasberg, then starting with stage work before finally moving to movies in 1976.  Brian De Palma noticed him and that kicked off a seriously impressive career;  ranging across everything from iconic movies to awesome television, making a mark with performances so intense, even seemingly small roles remain some of the best moments within his incredible oeuvre.

His early breakout came with Scarface (a De Palma classic). Then, Darren Aronofsky cast him in Pi (1998). 10. American Horror Story: Asylum (2012): The Nazi Hunter

Margolis appears in four episodes as Sam Goodman, a Nazi hunter, a role that helped propel this production and even generated increased interest through Margolis' portrayal which created powerful moments alongside the show’s already incredible ensemble cast; demonstrating his own capabilities, generating powerful impact even through smaller roles; a truly powerful role showing just how important a well-crafted part can greatly affect a larger whole!

This single Star Trek appearance in the episode "A Matter of Perspective" was iconic!  He plays a Tanugan scientist. That tension; this memorable scene of dozens of animals escaping from their hiding place after Mr. Shickadance’s visit, really added comedic moments to this film and these kinds of unpredictable situations made for an unforgettable comedy which created many moments highlighting that simple comedic relief could easily generate hilarious moments which really help add to the viewer's general sense of enjoyment. His frustrated expressions are brilliant! He was a comedic addition without sacrificing anything in that film’s comedic tone.

7. Your Honor (2023): A Final, Powerful Performance

Margolis' final role and another collaboration with Bryan Cranston in Your Honor’s season two. Margolis's Carmine Conti,  father of Gina Baxter and the grandfather who directly triggered that specific chain of events– and ultimately caused those profound tragic consequences within Cranston's plot. His manipulative skill set helped move this complex storyline towards an emotionally satisfying conclusion which was largely dependent upon Margolis’s own capability for crafting a memorable character; becoming the climax of an intensely compelling narrative arc.  This really highlighted how talented and incredible Margolis' capability for intense portrayals could generate an incredible response.

6. The Equalizer (1985-1989): The Surveillance Expert

A standout Margolis role spanning sixteen episodes as JimmyRobert McCall's old pal,  a surveillance pro who helps McCall (providing technical expertise in spying). He is someone known for always providing humorously detailed stories of his past and his relationship; even providing some memorable anecdotes about that hilarious ex-wife! Margolis’s versatility even in this long-term, serialized format generated another compelling, widely praised and loved addition to that era; another impressive and deeply moving depiction in television.

5. Pi (1998): The Mentorship and The Genesis of a Collaboration

Before Breaking BadMargolis was a star in Oz!  He's Antonio Nappa; He is one who wields power within those HBO prison walls and displays his intensity during the entire drama series.  He gains total dominance as a leader then is betrayed by another, demonstrating his strength, shrewd manipulation. Even that loss in Season 3, from contracting HIV, creates another incredibly profound and affecting story arc which displays the level of intensity only possible through such compelling and effective characters.

2. Scarface (1983): The Shadow’s Menacing Presence

Alberto The ShadowSosa’s right-hand man, is featured very prominently, only adding to that iconic film’s appeal and memorable characteristics!  He appears early, giving information about that extremely unreliable member Omar, his later death caused directly from Margolis's character and was entirely because Margolis's own portrayal which creates tension and adds immense unpredictability and excitement to the audience! Margolis's character is killed brutally by Tony Montana . This scene completely emphasizes just how serious things get during that specific story, enhancing a cinematic masterpiece, made even more amazing because of how such minor characters really have lasting impacts! His imposing figure is terrifying and unforgettable!

Margolis’s best performance ever— and easily this list's undisputed best role— he's back as Hector Salamanca (twenty-two episodes this time) . This allowed showing this amazing character’s strength; his brutal cunning; that total leadership capability!   This expansion and greater portrayal of the character totally showcased Hector’s immense power and that completely elevated a legendary character.  And it just never stops: his stubborn refusal to give information when in prison made an important part which helps to build even more intrigue and excitement.
