The much awaited follow-up to the highly praised "Joker" has leaked its first teaser, and with it a significant revelation: the inclusion of Harvey Dent, a character whose presence will definitely change the course of the movie.
Although his face is still unknown, the subtitles of the trailer expose Dent's presence via his dialogue, so verifying what viewers have long suspected based on set images for 2023. Featuring signs like "Free Joker" and "Dent Is A Clown," these images suggested his relationship to the Joker's narrative.
"Joker: Folie à Deux" promises to look at the consequences of Arthur Fleck's actions in the 2019 movie The teaser implies that Arthur will be the main focus of "The Trial of the Century," ideal background for Harvey Dent's introduction. Dent was Gotham's respected District Attorney, a lighthouse of justice meant to rid the city of its criminal element, before he famously changed into Two- Face. Having portrayed the prosecutor of Arthur Fleck's case, his presence in the sequel suggests a similar function.
Without showing Dent's face, the trailer gently suggests his position as the prosecutor. Dent says, "They believe Arthur Fleck to be some kind of martyr," at the start of the trailer. Well, he's not. He's a monster," seems to reflect the opening remarks of a trial, so preparing the ground for a turbulent legal fight.
Now that Dent's look in "Joker: Folie à Deux" is confirmed, one wonders whether the character will develop into the infamous villain, Two-face. Offering a fresh examination of the villain's beginnings, a narrative element sometimes left unexplored, the original "Joker" movie boldly redressed DC mythology. The sequel is expected to follow this trend of reinterpretation of classic characters, thus Harvey Dent's possible metamorphosis into Two- Face is intriguing.
"Joker: Folie à Deux" might investigate Dent's metamorphosis from an other angle. The comics attribute his plunge into Two- Face to an acid attack by a criminal, scarring his face and precipitating his spiral into craziness. But with his behavior in the first movie and the trailer's hints, Joaquin Phoenix's Arthur Fleck might be the impetus for Dent's change. Dent's metamorphosis might also be hinted at in the sequel and realized completely in a possible "Joker 3," so leaving the audience in a cliffhanger.
Dent's possible metamorphosis into Two- Face inside the "Joker" universe has broad ramifications. Particularly "The Batman - Part II," which will probably need to avoid delving into the origin story of Two- Face given his possible relationship to Arthur Fleck in this other timeline, it could profoundly affect the future of the DC franchise.
