Outside the New Characters, What Story Will Annihilation 2099 Tell?
Though it's great that several legendary Marvel Comics characters from Earth-616 continuity are receiving the 2099 treatment, beyond that what narrative is this limited series going to tell? Steve Orlando teases a vengeful antihero performing on television, but what does that imply? And will this incident mark the end of the 2099 reality as known from fan perspective?
Based on the details provided for every Annihilation 2099 issue, Orlando could be referring to someone else when she mentioned "iconic horror antihero." Maybe a major plot component will be Dracula's aim of transforming whole populations of planets into vampires. Alternatively perhaps the Silver Surfer, who appears to have been combined with Ghost Rider following a contract with Mephisto, will adopt a more "cosmic horror" quality of character? Even Red Hulk was a dark serial killer at his debut - might he be the newly-created "horror icon"?
Annihilation 2099 May Draw from the 2006 Event of the same named Marvel Comics
Annihilation from 2006 was a huge Marvel Comics event almost bringing the Marvel Universe to an end. It tracked the cosmic struggle Annihilus started when he burst through negative zone interdimensional boundaries into Earth-616's reality, sending his Annihilation Wave to seize the positive matter world. Though the Marvel release makes no reference to Annihilus or the 2006 event as a whole, the name of the limited series begs one to wonder if a "Annihilus 2099" will be joining these other 2099 characters.
Marvel Comics's "cosmic" approach fits the potential of successfully repeating 2006's Annihilation event with a 2099 lens (and might entail total extinction), but there is no mention of it in the Marvel release, hence fans shouldn't hold their breath. Rather, fans may concentrate on all the fascinating things Annihilation 2099 has revealed ahead of its publication, even if it may live up to its name a little too literally, and spell the extinction of these new Marvel Comics legends.
Marvel Comics Reveals the Future Limited Series Annihilation 2099
A fan-favorite alternate reality continuity, Marvel Comics' 2099 universe throws readers into a cyberpunk future filled by versions of all-star superheroes and villains both, all of which match that aesthetic. And now, away from the Blade Runner-esque streets of Nueva York and into a more cosmic age with Annihilation 2099, 2099 is exploring all-new Sci-Fi territory. Unfortunately, while these alt-future Marvel iconics could be facing cosmic extinction, this audacious new path for the 2099 cosmos may entail its final collapse.
Readers discover in a Marvel announcement revealing the forthcoming five-part limited series Annihilation 2099 that the 2099 world will be expanding to its already large roster with an emphasis on classic 2099 style adaptation of cosmic Marvel heroes. Nova 2099, Starlord 2099, Red Hulk 2099, and Silver Surfer 2099 are the icons debuting in Annihilation 2099. Furthermore, Dracula 2099 is returning to this world in a somewhat horrible manner since he is trying to spread his empire over the planet with hopes of transforming the populations of whole worlds into vampires.
The imaginative brains behind Annihilation 2099
Bringing these characters to life is a team of very gifted comic book writers because Annihilation 2099 will be directed under writer Steve Orlando, along with several amazing illustrators. Issue #1 artist Ibraim Roberson; José Luis for #2; Pete Woods for #3; Ario Anindito for #4; Dale Eagleshaw for #5.
Editor Mark Paniccia noted, "No pun intended, but Steve, Ibraim, Ario, José, Pete, and Dale have knocked this 2099 epic out of orbit!" Although their sentiments are encouraging, Paniccia isn't the only one thrilled about Annihilation 2099 since Steve Orlando also shows in this Marvel release their excitement for the project.
