Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga was released in 2024 and explores the origin story of Anya Taylor-Joy’s Furiosa. Though this movie is a great addition to the Mad Max franchise, it does have some missed opportunities.
With intense biker action sequences and a dramatic story, this movie gives audiences an emotional payoff. Audiences can follow Furiosa through an impressive and powerful Revenge arc. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga explores themes of freedom of a bygone era and touches on a beautiful romance of the road!
Furiosa was clearly designed to have a powerful Character Development arc, however, it missed its mark when it comes to female empowerment. This film should be celebrated as a strong story for its complex portrayal of female leads. Unfortunately, the narrative choices that George Miller makes make some genderless style choices inconsistent.
Fans should know the main antagonist is Dementus. He’s the ultimate, psychopathic revenge villain! But a few character development issues for Dementus made his death scene jarring. Miller is very careful to avoid explicit scenes, especially the ones that appeared in the original Mad Max comic book! So there isn’t a missed opportunity to address some tough issues.
With Furiosa's powerful arc, it's clear there are plenty of reasons for audiences to adore Anya Taylor-Joy's portrayal of this character. Unfortunately, her character was pushed toward sadistic cruelty, an attribute similar to that of her enemies. This doesn’t necessarily align with how Furiosa has always been viewed in previous installments of Mad Max: Fury Road.
The story of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga follows a different arc, but it's based on the comics. The comics can be pretty intense. The movie chose not to make these adaptations.
Despite these imperfections, this movie does capture that wild Mad Max energy and will leave you thrilled. This is worth watching as part of a biker movie collection, or simply for the unique character development that you will find with these characters in the Mad Max world!
