Cop Land, the gripping neo-noir crime thriller, gathered two cinematic icons, Sylvester Stallone and Robert De Niro, for the first time on film twenty-seven years ago. Though it might not transform its genre, this movie is unique especially with its great cast. Cop Land is, all things considered, one of Stallone's most underappreciated movies—a secret gem displaying his acting ability.
Known for helmingross several films including Logan, Walk the Line, and Girl, Interrupted, James Mangold adds 1997's Cop Land to his list of noteworthy creations. Though it did not set box office records, the movie received good reviews and made a respectable $63.7 million against a $15 million budget.
Stallone stars Sheriff Freddy Heflin, a small-town New Jersey lawman caught in a web of corruption, in Cop Land. Under the merciless Ray Donlan (Harvey Keitel), a group of dishonest NYPD cops use a legal loophole to settle into Heflin's town.
Heflin first resists cooperation when Lieutenant Moe Tilden (De Niro) an Internal Affairs investigator starts looking at the dirty cops. Having been unable to join the NYPD owing to his hearing loss, he idolizes Donlan. But when Donlan's nephew Officer Murray Babitch (Michael Rapaport) commits a horrific crime killing two Black teenagers, the matter gets darker.
Donlan helps Babitch fabricate his death and hide the crime. Fearing for his life, Babitch seeks safety with Heflin unintentionally bringing the sheriff into the sinister plans of the crooked police.
Cop Land lets Stallone and De Niro use their respective strengths in different ways, so highlighting their skills. Known for his riveting depictions of crime figures, De Niro is shockingly on the side of justice in this movie. After a run of humorous roles, Stallone won praise for his performance, proving he could abandon his action hero image and project a more approachable character. Critics hailed his subtle portrayal of a man caught between his conscience and his respect of the dishonest cops.
Stallone and De Niro came back on film in 2013 for Grudge Match, a sports comedy in which they portray rival, aging boxers vying in a last match. With Stallone's Rocky series and De Niro's Oscar-winning performance in Raging Bull, Grudge Match is an interesting viewing even if it isn't as highly praised as Cop Land, particularly for fans of the actors' past boxing roles. Though it lacks the genius of Cop Land, this fun, meta film plays on the actors' background.
Paramount+ has Cop Land available for streaming. Amazon Prime Video allows one to rent Grudge Match. Cop Land is a must-see for anyone seeking an engaging crime thriller with outstanding performances.
