Upgrade is pure, unadulterated fun. The action sequences are kick-ass, the humor’s dark and witty. It’s got a gritty vision of the future where tech controls everything— an unsettling but entirely amazing view of a future ruled entirely by technology!  Logan Marshall-Green’s character, implanted with a chip that takes control, creates a character completely dependent upon an external intelligence! It explores anxieties around technology; that loss of individual autonomy! And then the twist near the end? This was an exceptionally brilliant twist, using this AI-driven storyline as a pathway to explore how incredibly disturbing and powerful some of these elements could become when unrestrained. And all this really highlights how truly amazing Leigh Whannell is as a director!

9. Snowpiercer (2013): A Train Ride to the Edge of Existential Despair.

Bong Joon-ho’s Snowpiercer catapulted him into international stardom! This movie explores the post-climate change Earth via a train encircling the planet carrying those very few survivors.
