Sleep (2023) Movie Review: A Terrifying South Korean Horror Film

"Sleep" a terrifying South Korean horror movie with director, Jason Yu. His story puts audiences right into the life of a new couple.

Sleep has an incredibly interesting setting.

You will notice, right off the bat! A very well-decorated and very small apartment where the couple live in South Korea!

The apartment is full of décor that seems to really reflect this perfect new Couple life! It might not feel so cozy for you though as things start to go dark, sCary, and chaotic!

"Sleep" starts with the wife Soo-jin (played by Jung Yu-mi, a great South Korean actress), trying her best to make things work.

She even has a new baby on the way! But in her life there's something far more terrifying than an unborn child.

Her husband Hyun-su (played by the great Lee Sun-kyun of "Parasite" fame), begins having some super scary moments at night. He seems to have this strange power to do things such as:

Eating raw meats, eggs and fish straight from their refrigerator.
Scratching himself! So bad that it's actually starting to bleed

You can only imagine the feelings she must have to keep going! Her husband's behavior makes her wonder if things are just as chaotic as they look and she has to try every solution.

There are medicines, and of course she even turns to mysticism

It really is an exploration into what's most disturbing and the Unknown elements.

A Memorable Performance

If you have loved Jung Yu-mi's work before you will find she really elevates "Sleep" into this fantastic horror movie that leaves viewers full of wonder.

Yu-mi, brings "Soo-jin" to life with so many beautiful, heartfelt moments. She goes way beyond what's required, really adding incredible depth to her acting! There's this special and wonderful bond between her and Lee Sun-kyun.

The character that really brings this movie to life for fans is Soo-jin.
She's one of those figures that gives you so much trust!
"Soo-jin" is so real that viewers really buy into everything, from the sweetest of moments to moments of fear.

It is hard not to see her performance and fall in love, even as she watches what her husband is going through. It turns out, there is no limit to the courage that Soo-jin has and that she really faces it all head-on!

For Sleep this is truly what makes it stand out from a slew of other Horror flicks. This is not just a scare tactic!

A Unique Horror Film

You won't believe what the film goes through to try and keep this movie as compelling and engaging!

With such a small setting as a very confined Apartment.

The director had a really impressive approach, using different techniques.

It takes the audience right up to Soo-jin's eyes! This puts everyone in her world to give that truly claustrophobic feeling, and as it all unfolds, Yu has this camera move back! Showing this small apartment, all in one frame.
And then the camera does something unexpected by taking on a hand-held shot. Which gives a truly chaotic, and wild perspective, as you get thrown around all through this movie!

It turns out that while this is terrifying, the chaos brings a true understanding of the terror and how disorienting the horror film really is. The director does a great job, adding some creative camerawork that really stands out! The visual effect is pretty special!

"Sleep" has an extra, eerie special effect when you get a glimpse of a reflection in a Mirror.

A Big Shock That You Won't See Coming!

As you continue to watch, you see a great show with Hyun-su! He has a rough night, gets into his Car. and has a disturbingly weird drive! When he makes it back to his apartment, you won't believe your eyes!

It's as if he's no longer in the same apartment!
There are lots of praying papers and an old world feeling to it.

What does "Sleep" bring? You will feel it when you get to the "third act," It looks like the show almost got derailed, but luckily, the director, was able to bring some much needed calmness to the madness.

Yu, really gives us a chance to feel the weight of this show.

The film even does an incredible job explaining to us why there's such an urgency!
It really pushes us to see that both "Soo-jin" and "Hyun-su" don't want to lose one another!

"Sleep" really throws those elements, one that keeps viewers questioning the entire show!

There is one more element about "Sleep" that will make it unforgettable for fans!

It shows just how powerful South Korean cinema truly is.
You get to experience some wonderful, frightening and thought provoking tales!

This is one movie that stands out!
