Singham Again: A Diwali Dud or a Star-Studded Spectacle?
Ajay Devgn is back as Bajirao Singham in Singham Again, the latest installment in Rohit Shetty's "Cop Universe." This big Diwali release, dedicated to the Jammu & Kashmir police, follows two prior Singham films and spin-offs Simmba (2018) and Sooryavanshi (2021). Shetty's clearly aiming for that classic 70s-80s mass cinema vibe; however, this latest production feels more empty; more shallow compared to its earlier iterations. This one relies far too heavily on those overused action tropes wrapped up in a rather thinly veiled cloak of nationalism. It's a shame because it lacks originality; a completely indifferent, uninspired script leaves audiences longing for better!
Singham's (Devgn) criminal network has gone global; beyond even the long-time nemesis Jackie Shroff. But the real show is seeing those amazing guest stars wrestle with this truly awful script. Kareena Kapoor Khan (as Mrs. Singham) does little, really; another damsel in distress. Deepika Padukone's regional commander does AWOL things, and Ranveer Singh's irritating Simmba is also involved! Even these star appearances only showcase how even some strong names in this industry simply can't really elevate something completely devoid of imagination.
Devgn's eternally poker-faced Singham is back, although his low-energy persona doesn’t really invite much drama. Shetty's excessive praise towards the character really kills any potential tension; that lack of creativity leads to very obvious plot holes. Those cringeworthy attempts at updating Singham's jargon – “situationships”? —show the lack of consideration given to current times! The plot really feels as if the production merely wants that holiday appeal for more people rather than concentrating on creating a decent production which would naturally appeal to moviegoers during these periods! The overt Islamophobia? Troubling, folks. Those insensitive comments should have absolutely not appeared!
Singham Again relies on those well-known star names to succeed. Yet the poor storytelling makes its success questionable; its only potential selling point remaining this star-powered ensemble; creating expectations that simply were not going to be possible, at least not in this particular case. There are really too many negative aspects which could harm it in long-term.
Singham Again might’ve had some things going for it; the star power and holiday season. But its serious shortcomings show lazy writing, lacking any compelling story which also failed to deliver creative writing, and other even worse problems leave many wondering why this was released. It does not deserve the praise given, given the amount of other far better produced material available, showing its fundamental failure; a wasted opportunity for something truly impressive, especially when the previous installments and their reception were much better.
If you’re searching for something actually good; watch anything else during this holiday period. The overall quality was too poor, with those additional issues creating a generally negative perception. Avoid.
