The biopic is not a typical depiction of Robbie Williams’s life. It is uniquely told by having him be portrayed in a CGI Ape style, unlike what would be normally expected from this type of movie genre. This unexpected method allows the movie to express an allegorical sense of how Williams felt like a performer that was on display his whole life, rather than a human with feelings.
The film's use of CGI characters offers a creative new perspective instead of showing the normal human actor. As this unique and very bold choice it elevates the project with elements of a fun type of visual exploration along with new form of storytelling. His voiceover was featured with the CGI creation which creates a compelling form of engagement with his personal experience as a musician.
The biopic follows Williams’ life starting from his early days with his family while being inspired by his father. It features how he started a career in music by joining the group “Take That.” His life is shown with many ups and downs of fame that have lead to problems with drugs and the negative effects on his overall mental health.
The film explores familiar notes from biopics that feature struggles with substance use. It showcases both high times and negative challenges while going through the experience of sudden fame. Williams shares every part of this process good or bad creating honesty within the plot points. His desire to show himself for both good or bad as a persona of his creation is shown to all the viewers.
Williams has a direct approach in how he was willing to portray himself in this production and let the world see his journey as is. It shows he's transparent about even the worst decisions and openly allows those to also be showcased through the new film format. With creative input and the way the format is shown he wanted people to see it through his point of view. He wanted viewers to know his true self as opposed to the public image that he created.
Williams used this as a platform to be more transparent than other artists using their bio pics to only highlight the good. He was heavily involved and gives great feedback but chose not to micromanage how his image should be depicted creating trust with creative direction. He agreed to all ideas which showcased his unique nature and allows a very open telling of what his life has been like.
The visual style allows for more free thinking in what would usually be a restrictive form of film type. It utilizes motion capture along with Williams voice and eyes as well as some unexpected bursts into musical sequences . The musical format showcases a part of himself while demonstrating it with his unique style to be used for a new experience.
A lot of importance is also given to family who had the chance to express different versions of the story through this project including a difficult relationship with his father. His grandmother, mother, his past and current partners each have individual impact on the storytelling format creating an honest representation of how others saw his character throughout the whole period of his life. The interactions with actors also creates compelling moments that show all sides and aspects of every point of view.
