The Academy Awards, more commonly known as the Oscars, continue to be a defining force in the film industry. The 97th Academy Awards are approaching and as the process progresses many steps are involved to secure a chance at obtaining this honor.
There are 323 feature films that have qualified for the 2025 Oscars. Of that number only 207 movies have qualified for Best Picture category. The movies that didn't qualify had an option to be removed or didn't follow all the steps that would be required in the general entry categories.
For all categories a feature film must run for over 40 minutes and have debuted in a commercial theater for at least 7 consecutive days. This debut must have been within one of the select cities Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Chicago, Dallas or Atlanta. These parameters must have occurred between January 1st to December 31st 2024.
For films seeking to be in the Best Picture category additional requirements must be met. They need to submit a confidential Academy Representation and Inclusion Standards (RAISE) form along with an expanded theater run that is at least 7 days consecutive or non-consecutive in 10 out of the top 50 U.S markets 45 days after the films first release in 2024. Additionally two of four hurdles relating to the RAISE forms need to be completed. The parameters focus on diversity and inclusion with items like onscreen representation, inclusivity in department heads and various other components.
While The Golden Globes and Oscars are not directly correlated they provide an inside glimpse as to how the Academy might proceed in selection. They are both key events during awards season highlighting success while providing conversation points that will shape the way other events may play out in future events.
The Golden Globes awarded a variety of talent with “The Brutalist” earning multiple trophies and “Emilia Pérez” having a total of four different wins. Also many wins surprised a good number of viewers for both new and established talent. Such wins can add momentum to the future shows where similar nominations will be taken under consideration.
Along with the show, talent such as Fernanda Torres winning Best Actress for "I’m Still Here” has created much discussion as other recognizable names were nominated in that category but she still won out. As such many actors have been showing off new talent and skill through powerful and unique presentations which are taking hold in social media.
The nominations voting for the Academy Awards starts on January 8, and concludes on January 12th, 2025. After that the official nominations will be released January 17th . The Academy Awards will be taking place March 2 at Ovation Hollywood. These milestones mark an important approach as to what is needed to see an award be properly earned.
Many notable titles failed to meet the new guidelines and will not be considered in the top running position, among those movies are “Bad Boys: Ride or Die,” “Mean Girls,” “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” "The Girl with the Needle", “Knox Goes Away” and "Woman of the Hour". This group showed that the requirements will need to be met for certain awards and it might be in an effort to focus on films that fit the new format.
Though excluded from Best Picture, some of these excluded movies may still appear in other categories, and also highlight different types of creative contributions to the film industry as a whole as various directors from multiple origins showcase their best works from multiple angles.
The Academy Awards does give out honorary awards as well. many past events are explored through series that showcase and document each event. As new technologies evolve awards shows like this are constantly working to engage and grow a community of interest.
Award shows including the Oscars, have moved in with streaming content. Where in the past award ceremonies where mainly on linear television as viewership has dropped a great deal, the options have had to evolve to a mix of broadcast and also on-demand services.
The Academy is addressing diversity and inclusion concerns through new and developing rules regarding specific criteria. These efforts will continue to evolve in a goal to promote many differing voices which were not represented in the past in large scale platforms.
