Magpie Movie Review: Daisy Ridley Shines in Twisted Psychological Thriller

Magpie: Daisy Ridley Shines in a Twisted, Gripping psychological thriller!

Magpie: A Slow-Burn Thriller That Will Leave You Breathless

Domestic thrillers can get pretty wild, but Magpie, starring the amazing Daisy Ridley, takes things to a whole new level.  This psychological thriller is seriously gripping— that slow-burn tension just builds and builds, culminating in a crazy satisfying, chilling, and darkly funny ending.  It's seriously clever how it uses familiar thriller tropes in inventive ways, leaving you wanting more even after the final credits roll.

First-time director Sam Yates (working from Tom Bateman's script) crafts a world of unease from the very first scene, creating that uneasy feeling that just increases until that perfectly-timed climactic finale. You see the cracks in the marriage between Annette (Ridley) and Ben (Shazad Latif) right away. Ben's a self-absorbed writer, his ego fragile after a creative dry spell. Annette's stuck at home with their newborn and largely ignored, that lonely, isolated existence. Even their home contributes; it feels isolating and adds even greater effect.

Ridley (who came up with the idea for this movie) masterfully captures Annette's complex emotional range— frustration, fear, determination.  It's a beautifully nuanced performance.  And it only gets better as Ben's infatuation with Alicia (Matilda Anna Ingrid Lutz), a disgraced actress, throws Annette further off-kilter.   That intense, building tension in their relationship creates that unsettling feeling, drawing you further and further into the heart of their extremely strange interactions.

Magpie brilliantly paints Annette as a lonely, scorned wife— totally justified given Ben's actions. That intentional unraveling works exceptionally well! The further things spiral the more amazing and powerful that climactic conclusion appears and the perfectly executed and superb ending in this incredibly tense and incredibly effective film.

Daisy Ridley's Masterclass: A Performance That Will Stay with You

Ridley's post-Star Wars career has been unexpectedly eclectic and intensely indie, she does truly excellent work here. This time however, you're watching that really exceptional performance of exceptional range;  you don’t even need to see dialog, Annette's emotional turmoil is perfectly conveyed using facial expressions and gestures. It’s stunning. She goes through frustration, anger, vulnerability, all with total confidence, showcasing those extremely detailed performances which helped to create one of the highlights of the movie. This film showcases this and truly demonstrates her raw talent!

The supporting cast also gives stellar performances.  Latif nails Ben's irritating indifference; perfectly emphasizing the character's uncaring approach. The contrast between his engagement with Alicia and total disengagement with his wife builds tension. And Lutz (Alicia) perfectly shifts from sultry to genuine; leading to more speculation regarding everything the character does in those intense moments with the rest of the cast.
