Tears of the Kingdom (TOTK) and Breath of the Wild (BOTW) gave us some super awesome world exploration - that's no joke. But one really weird detail that you might have missed? All of Hyrule's rivers! They don't change heights. Ever! Talk about a wild detail!
You would think that a game that has all sorts of crazy sky islands - that makes Hyrule's landscape so fascinating - would actually have rivers that have those awesome dips and curves! Well, in both BOTW and TOTK those rivers seem to be a flat line. And nobody is really talking about it, and it makes the game even weirder.
We can all blame video game design - think of how the rivers worked. They had to make those river-sailing ships so cool, but if they made the river flow, it might have made the whole thing a bit of a mess! I am actually glad they made it simple.
Those awesome sky islands probably also have some other crazy logic too. I mean, we're talking a whole new world with awesome video game maps - they might have had to break some real-world science to get all the cool stuff they were going for!
Well, they took that familiar Hyrule and made it super different! They were so creative! And even though it's not like a super realistic world - with super-complex video game landscapes, it just feels really cool to wander around, even when the Hyrule Map is kinda funky. The developers probably did it for a good reason - I just can't figure out why all the rivers are so flat.
But there's one thing for sure - they did a fantastic job with those Zelda games! They had us completely hooked exploring the landscapes and rivers - they are both incredible games - but they're a little bit wacky, which just makes them more amazing.
