Venom: The Last Dance – Is the Punisher the Perfect Villain for Spider-Man 4?
With Tom Holland's Spider-Man essentially rebooting his world in No Way Home, Spider-Man 4 has incredible possibilities. The MCU post-Infinity Saga landscape has totally shifted. Many new characters are here. Yet some really famous heroes got sidelined! Then came Daredevil: Born Again, which cleverly introduced many beloved characters from that earlier Netflix show and that includes a huge crossover moment.
Since those Netflix characters were mostly grounded in street-level heroism around New York, this gives direct connections to Spider-Man! His storylines always had some amazing villains and given how much crossover has happened; that’s the kind of element that could revitalize these shows and bring even more memorable events, making that plot development absolutely critical for enhancing viewer interest! It has a big impact and even just introducing an amazing and suitable villain for this setting; could reignite major interest within a slightly waning storyline.
Jon Bernthal’s Punisher is interesting. He’s sympathetic in many ways; yet completely violent. This creates that anti-hero aspect and generates conflicting opinions towards him. This mirrors Matt Murdock (Daredevil), who avoids his brutality and has his own internal moral struggles.
In the comics, Spider-Man faces Punisher as a villain, similar to his conflicts with other ruthless criminals and major nemeses like Rhino, Sandman, and Kingpin. This presents the potential for an intense conflict. This sets up that classic moral dilemma that really highlights Peter Parker's ongoing self-discovery. He's on this amazing journey that emphasizes the limits and capabilities of what it truly means to remain heroic! What makes this all even more relevant and appropriate: Daredevil: Born Again might even use the scariest villain to ever feature within the MCU—this adds further suspense.
The MCU occasionally focuses on morality on a large scale. But Peter Parker's journey is more like Daredevil's. Both are always trying to hold a strict moral compass. But those moral compasses, when faced against significant pressures, sometimes bend.
Peter, despite his powers, is reckless. In Homecoming, his attacks are far too brutal and he causes massive collateral damage. Later in Endgame, he has his suit on full lethal mode and doesn't think twice about eliminating enemies, creating that important contrast with his more typically kind attitude and he even threatens a potential and surprising fall towards brutal revenge in No Way Home, which gives this entire arc immense value.
It all connects now! Introducing Punisher as a villain, in Spider-Man 4 gives that amazing opportunity to explore how extreme methods create this amazing question regarding those boundaries between hero and vigilante; especially the points which may potentially blur these lines, as those are the ones which often matter the most, generating immense impact on those situations and characters involved.
Peter might already know Matt Murdock (No Way Home); even their interactions are going to be completely different. Yet both operate in that same environment – it makes sense that Peter might try helping and resolving a fight, especially between two morally gray characters; which then gives Peter that incredible moment of insight – examining exactly where his place falls, in this morally-complex reality! Those considerations have deep value; creating intense conflicts, particularly when facing that extremely complex and difficult reality!
Daredevil: Born Again is setting up that incredible crossover. Many characters from that Netflix series might be here – including Kingpin (he appeared in Echo and Hawkeye) and Punisher! Both are part of Spider-Man’s comic book history. So, this is the moment that could possibly give a unique appearance for Punisher.
There’s more! Those Avengers movies (Doomsday and Secret Wars) might need even more major appearances; making other characters (like Daredevil’s already featured in other storylines), Punisher could even appear as this unique plotline’s amazing, exciting focus!
Spider-Man 4 could be insane. The chance to give Peter Parker another amazing, deeply reflective moral journey is completely here, enhanced by bringing those themes involving street-level heroism. And Punisher’s introduction could be massive. He might even force Peter to reconsider himself! It might be completely heartbreaking; especially when thinking about the limits and challenges these characters already struggle with in many other plotlines.
