Thiollier's Concoction: Should You Poison the Dragon Communion Priestess in Elden Ring?

Should you drink Thiollier's Concoction in Shadow of the Erdtree?

Thiollier's Concoction, a consumable that, all signs suggest will kill the Tarnished the moment they drink it, is one of the strangest new objects presented in Elden Ring. This item first appears to players on Thiollier's questline in Shadow of the Erdtree. Following their first encounter with Thiollier the poisoner close to the Pillar Path Cross Site of Grace, then back-off to speak with Moore, the later merchant will ask them to bring a pot of black syrup. Bring that back to Thiollier; he will thank you for sharing some of his creation.

Clearly enough from Thiollier's Concoction's flavor text: "for an ordinary mortal, a single sip would assuredly result in swift and certain death." But the Tarnished is probably no typical mortal, and this object serves no clear use right now. Moore wants nothing to do with it, there are no stated buffs in combat, and it hardly sells for all that much. Still, Thiollier's mixture has no clear use, but there is a way to make it work for the Tarnished's benefit only they have to find it.

Use Thiollier's Concoction In Shadow of the Erdtree: What Happens?

Players should first and foremost avoid really drinking Thiollier's Concoction in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree. Drink it, and the Tarnished will die right away; Thiollier advises them only to use it if they are tired of the world and neither he nor the flavor text are lying. It will be a waste even if it won't be any different from dying to a high fall or one of Elden Ring's toughest boss battles. Although most likely right next to where they died at Pillar Path Cross, the player can still go and retrieve their lost runes when they respawn; they have wasted a chance to use the item for their own advantage.

Most of Elden Ring's DLC comes with just one free Thiollier's Concoction bottle for players who do a favor for Moore; the rest call for payment. Although the mix has no immediate advantage for the player, it can be used to finish another mission toward the Dragon Communion Priestess far down the road. That gets infinitely more difficult, though, if the player chooses to test Thiollier's Concoction on himself.

Purchasing one from Thiollier at 30,000 Rye is the only way to get a second vial of Thiollier's Concoction. If the player has already finished his assignments, though, they can also find more via Moore's questline, which can take a long time and send the player up against some rather tough bosses.

Following the delivery, the player will have to gather as many Forager Brood Cookbooks as they can before carrying on the main quest until Shadow of the Erdtree delivers the message "a Great Rune has broken". Their two choices for conversation upon returning to Moore will be "put it behind you" or "remain sad forever." Choose the first; Moore will show up in the final boss fight against Needle Knight Leda at Enir-Ilim; the second, and he will be dead behind the Church of the Crusade.

Eventually, either choice will net Moore's Bell Bearing, which they can gift the Twin Maiden Husks at Roundtable Hold to release Thiollier's Concoction for purchase. Still, it costs 30,000 runes a pop, which is hardly worth sneezing at even at the high levels needed by Shadow of the Erdtree.

Should you offer the Dragon Communion Priestess in Elden Ring Thiollier's Concoction?

Drinking Thiollier's mixture is obviously lethal as well as a great waste of time. But for what exactly is the Tarnished meant to use it? As it happens, Thiollier's Concoction also finds application in the Dragon Communion Priestess, who is ideally situated adjacent to the Grand Altar of Dragon Communion. Most players probably will come across her sometime after meeting Igon and before facing Ancient Dragon Senessax; players must meet her before defeating Bayle in Shadow of the Erdtree. Talk to her on any regular day and she will enthrall the Tarnished with stories of mighty dragons. She also allows them to eat shadow of the Erdtree's Dracoic essence.

However, the player can use Thiollier's Concoction by speaking with the Dragon Communion Priestess at night carrying it with them. Though it will cause her to fall asleep rather than kill her as it will the Tarnished. The player will have to pass two in-game days then go back and talk to her once more. Should they confess to poisoning Bayle, the Dragon Communion Priestess herself will be summoned as a Spirit Ash; otherwise, they will get two rewards: the incantation Dragonbolt Of Florissax, which calls for red bolts of lightning.

Still, this is a rather nasty trick with a horrible narrative result. The Tarnished is so violating her oath to Dragonlord Placidusax by rendering the Priestess into a deep sleep. Her god then deserts her, and, not knowing better, she thinks the entire affair is her fault.

Should the player refuse to apply Thiollier's Concoction on the Dragon Communion Priestess, they will be rewarded differently upon defeating Bayle. Should the player return under these circumstances, the Dragon Communion Priestess will be missing. She has left behind the Priestess Heart and a Flowerstone Gavel, though.

The former is just a good hammer; the latter is more fascinating once used since it turns the Tarnished into an ancient dragon. Should they use it once more, their dragon incantations' power will increase. One of the more amazing new objects in Shadow of the Erdtree, this opens a whole fresh gameplay approach. Thiollier's Concoction should thus be left unused unless the Dragonbolt Of Florissax and Priestess calls for sound totally irresistible.

Thus, even if Thiollier's Concoction is not absolutely useless, practically everyone benefits if it simply rots in the player's inventory. Having said that, it can be used for some other quest outcomes even if the rewards are rather uninteresting and the results are unpleasant. The player decides what to do with Thiollier's Concoction in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree ultimately.
