The game focuses on James and his journey through Silent Hill. His deepest secrets are revealed. He comes to terms with his past! This makes players consider whether James is really a victim of his circumstances or a true villain. At the end, players find a tape, which he originally thought was from a past vacation with his deceased wife Mary. But this is much more disturbing. What we see, is a snuff film showing James killing Mary.

Why James Isn't the Villain

While it's clear he's committed murder. There are important points that are explored in the game to give viewers a lot to think about.

It turns out, Mary, was verbally abusive during her last days and there is an audiotape showing the depth of these last moments.
What the audio message does, is provide a window for the reasons James did what he did, suggesting Mary herself wanted to end things.
Her illness, (possibly skin cancer), made it all difficult for her!
Mary wanted the pain to stop and even discussed it with her doctors.
Though she apologized. It doesn't really make James actions ok. What was interesting, James never wanted Mary to really die.

This is important! James's actions reflect his intense regrets and he believes he needs to pay the consequences of Mary's death. He constantly searches for redemption and does what he can to save others in Silent Hill. This all comes into view when he interacts with many others who are just as lost as him!

He encounters Angela in the cemetery. She gives warnings that James actually believes!
He notices Angela contemplating suicide, taking away her knife! This suggests his hope for her!
James also helps Angela to fight against her inner demons!
James also displays kindness to Laura!
Despite initial difficulties, they come to a reconciliation.

Why James IS the Villain

The other side to this! You might say James was a killer out of selfishness! In fact, his guilt around Mary's death, it seems, is his own selfish desire to flee a challenging and complex relationship.

There's plenty of evidence pointing that he cheated, or had thought about cheating on Mary during her sickness.

Maria, a duplicate of Mary, preys on his desires! There are scenes where James is drawn to her which reflects an immense conflict and turmoil for this character!
There's one special moment where James abandons the whole search for Mary, instead beginning a new relationship.

This clearly showcases just how dark this James can be and that makes the other aspects of this main character, full of guilt.

The James & Eddie Encounter

The last powerful moment to really consider James's true personality shows his dealings with another lost soul named Eddie. Eddie suffered greatly! The bullying pushed him to an extreme place, including killing someone's dog! He meets up with James.

James makes an effort to comfort Eddie. However, his paranoid, emotional state creates the worst! In the end, Eddie believes James is against him, and they clash in an intense, deadly moment that brings the death of Eddie. It's possible James killed Eddie in self defense, which puts it on the viewers to figure out how much fault really lies with James. But it can be stated that James bears some blame.

The Timelessness Of Silent Hill 2:
