Feeling stumped by today's Connections puzzle? Don't worry; we've got you covered! This puzzle has some seriously tricky parts due to the overlap in categories; it has categories that have similar words— but with some carefully applied strategies this puzzle should prove to be rather easy!
We'll provide hints, some helpful strategies and, of course, the answers to help you out. If you want something a bit different, you could also try the NYT's The Strands puzzle– a themed word search where guessing incorrectly can GENERATE more hints which may lead to getting that crucial word to complete the entire puzzle; which might be useful if these tips don’t help!
This puzzle needs careful word analysis! Many words could belong in several huge categories, yet correctly defining and using them based on the appropriate context requires identifying the key differences. The clues below will highlight some of those key features to successfully get to that next stage of getting the solutions: this step is exceptionally critical.
The solutions are GENERATE, INSPIRE, PROMPT, PROVOKE. Initially, PROVOKE seemed like it might go with another category due to the other categories involving harsher or far more aggressive elements, like physical attacks. The words GENERATE, INSPIRE, and PROMPT seemed related but, at that point, were insufficient to conclude the theme; therefore they were ultimately saved and considered for a future category which would remain unfinished until after most of the categories had already been found.
The solutions are CANDLE, INCENSE, LOTION, SOAP. Initially, INCENSE felt out of place. The initially attempted inclusion for INCENSE in another category failed entirely and was later rediscovered after reconsidering how scents overlap.
The solutions are INSULT, JELLYFISH, NETTLE, WASP. Once those connections were clear (WASP and JELLYFISH both sting directly) those similar themes revealed themselves rather easily: It involved more metaphorical uses of stings for both NETTLE and INSULT! The creative usage of multiple interpretations of “sting” cleverly utilizes an implied word relationship and its possible synonyms. The fun inclusion of "Finding Nemo" references shows how well the subtle humor can work in these puzzles; unexpectedly increasing audience connection.
The solutions are CIVILIZATION, HALO, MADDEN, METROID. Easy for gamers—recognizing MADDEN and CIVILIZATION immediately. Recognizing HALO and METROID helped complete that theme quite rapidly. It's a perfect example for gamers that will simply know the answers upon having only heard of each.
