Metaphor: ReFantazio: A JRPG Epic With Multiple Endings – Which Will You Get?

Metaphor: ReFantazio, from the creators of the legendary Persona series, is a unique JRPG masterpiece. It features deep story choices; affecting what transpires, creating multiple endings based on those specific choices players make. The main story follows our hero, Will (the default name; yet others are possible depending on gameplay decisions made), loyal to his childhood friend, the Prince of Euchronia. Everything kicks off with the King’s assassination (Hythlodaeus V). The Prince, cursed (from a prior attack), is assumed dead; forcing Will into a revenge quest targeting the assassin, Louis Guiabern; this event greatly affects what transpires throughout the entire storyline.

Will, wielding newly found power (the Archetype), gets embroiled in a huge mess. A massive face of the dead King appears, announcing an election for a new ruler! Will’s goal is now to seek revenge for his friend by battling Louis and delivering an all-important message, all these factors and more add a sense of high stakes to everything that follows; however, we learn very quickly those events unfold to not just be about Louis; an even greater plot awaits and creates an amazing storyline which builds tension.

Metaphor: ReFantazio's multiple endings require specific dialogue options during critical moments late in the storyline, some only accessible by selecting unique options not available through normal, typical choices! These critical events add tremendous variety and replayability. Each ending carries a totally distinct meaning!

1. Fantasy Is Dead: A World Forgotten

This occurs when Will returns to the Prince and the curse gets broken!  A shocking revelation occurs: The Prince dies! That event immediately throws the player into this intense monologue of a disembodied voice. The player is informed that it’s the Prince's mother; this same mysterious voice reveals a profound truth and explains the entire relationship of the Archetype and its role toward the Prince: Will is the Prince's Archetype! And this key moment, an essential element to understanding what this event entails leads to another crucial realization: Will's destiny is merging with Prince to resurrect him and give him the throne; an intense decision regarding accepting a previously unacknowledged lineage; the choice to become this crucial savior that creates this very important thematic choice throughout the ending.

Denying his destiny (choose “It came to nothing,” “It was a mistake,” “...Lies dead before me.”) results in this bleak ending: Louis becomes king (unopposed). That rule utterly destroys Euchronia and this event is completely and totally lost from history! This is really intense; emphasizing the scale of failure and destruction!

2. Fantasy Is Ruined: A World Transformed into Monsters

This dark ending branches out from the other choices in which the Prince actually survives; only accessible if Will agrees to this merger to become King and chooses to fight Louis. It reveals that Louis is an Elda (an ancient, magical tribe predating magic itself).  His knowledge includes the near-total annihilation of humanity; destroyed because of the discovery of magic—   and he intends to repeat this!

Louis plans to turn Euchronia into monsters with the King’s Sceptre and will start another age of mass annihilation!  If Will says, "You're absolutely right," it creates this disturbing dystopian result, as the duo joins as rulers and turn all inhabitants of Euchronia into savage monsters— their new rule will not produce the paradise described by Louis but something far more monstrous.

3. Fantasy Is Only Fiction: Escaping into a (False) Utopia

Refuse to team up with Louis to produce an extremely dire consequence: This leads to a battle against Louis.  The intense use of powerful magic destroys Will's spirit, leaving Will dying!   Suddenly he is in Akademeia (the library introducing Archetypes!). A person known as More appears (he’s actually the author of that utopian novel gifted by Prince); giving an entirely new interpretation— that whole Euchronian world was all imaginary.

More offers a way out–joining his “reality”—a seemingly wonderful, prejudice-free modern city, seemingly paradisiacal – all he must do is admit Euchronia was fantasy.

Agreeing ("I understand...You're right") transports Will to his “reality”; yet is still fictional; it’s another dystopian vision; this ending highlights how deeply cynical the reality depicted in this ending might seem to viewers and it lacks resolution because all of Will’s previous achievements mean absolutely nothing and demonstrates the profound disappointment which is implied in choosing this rather disappointing final moment which lacks even those hints of potential development in future content.

4. Fantasy Lives On: The Path to Utopia

Rejecting More's escape and returning to the real world of Euchronia leads to the only happy ending.  The extended fight with Louis results in a victorious Will destroying the Royal Sceptre, a weapon used throughout this ending and ultimately prevented from becoming yet another way in which destruction and widespread annihilation was made possible. That act and victory, electing Will as king – eliminating the dead King's vision from the skies and a final thanking by More (who's that previous King’s Archetype)! An extremely enjoyable epilogue involving Will and his friends beginning the very hard work of healing Euchronia.

The hopeful note about new plant life even growing from those arid places suggests an amazing potential in future installments and is extremely optimistic, emphasizing that a better future awaits the survivors; providing just that hint of that better tomorrow.

Metaphor: ReFantazio expertly showcases those moments in JRPGs; where multiple decision-making greatly impact everything and what unfolds later in that gameplay. The brilliance of those endings and the starkly contrasted tones show this particular narrative really knows what it is aiming for.  Those grim dystopias stand in sharp contrast with a true hope for a better tomorrow which highlights those contrasts which further help readers to enjoy all aspects of this particular game. The sheer variety and impact should generate much replayability. Every decision really matters. That creates both a gripping storyline and immense replay value!
