The meticulous worlds and interesting random encounters of Bethesda's Fallout games are well-known. One particular encounter in Fallout 4 stands out for its hilarious ending, provided the Sole Survivor has the right stats. Every run of the Commonwealth is different because of the odd people and weird sights it boasts. Whether through environmental storytelling or fleeting random interactions, some encounters serve to augment the narrative of the wasteland while others are part of more general searches. This particular meeting involves a patrolling Mr. Gutsy robot, thus a high Luck stat would cause a real riot.
Common in the Fallout universe, Mr. Gutsy robots also abound in Fallout 4 and may be encountered enforcing a pre-war ban. Seemingly oblivious to the end of the war, this robot can be seen patrolling other roads and bridges including the one close to Beantown Brewery. The robot will attempt to enforce the curfew; you could either fight or comply. If your Luck score is high, though, there is a more interesting approach to address this.
Designed to set off in areas with limited movement, such as bridges or tunnels, this specific interaction is what Fallout 4 refers to as a chokepoint encounter. The robot will start conversation as you try to pass it, telling you of the required curfew. It seems ignorant or apathetic that the war is over; its orders came from Provisional Governor Graham. Terminal entries in the Massachusetts State House, near Boston Common, let one learn Governor Graham's story. These records show Graham seizing authority in October 2077, imposing martial law and charging Boston with communist penetration. Though his paranoia and ego drove him to send military robots to execute his orders with lethal force, it is unknown whether he took control before or after the bombs fell.
Most Sole Survivors have either comply and leave the area or refuse and fight the robot as their choices. Should you comply but not move sufficiently far away, the Mr. Gutsy will grow hostile and start fighting. High charismatic people can assert they are on vital military business, which lets the robot respect their position and let them pass quietly. If your Luck statistic is seven or above, though, there is a funnier choice available. Speaking with the Mr. Gutsy, it will ask, "Repeat, will you comply?" Should you select the highest choice—that of "Will you comply?" the fun starts.
It's funny to repeat the Mr. Gutsy's directive back to it since each of the two Sole Survivor voice actors takes different meaning of the line. Like a child or teen, a female Sole Survivor will sound mocking; the final delivery is especially humorous. Adopting a more robotic voice, the male Sole Survivor parodies the Mr. Gutsy as a "fellow robot." This fun game will fail and the Mr. Gutsy will turn hostile if you lack enough Luck. Still, the Mr. Gutsy will malfunction after running the line four times. It says a loop has been found, glows red as it overheats, then explodes. Although many would play Fallout 4 and never come across this random event, for those fortunate enough to discover it it's a funny illustration of the developers' sense of humor and a bonus for great stats.
