It happens at four different sites over a 12 year cycle with Prayagraj having the most significant as this is held there every 144 years.
The Maha Kumbh Mela at Prayagraj involves ritual bathing at the convergence of three of India’s most sacred rivers, Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati and each one is deemed sacred. Devotees are thought to free their souls from endless rebirths through bathing. Along with holy practices spiritual teachers present ancient philosophies, traditional cultures and yoga for those to engage with which is attractive to many.
The major components of the festival are when individuals immerse in the waters. Also, there are other major rituals that include various traditional offerings from several communities in the event. Dates were also announced for the Shahi Snan, or major holy dips, including one that would take place on January 29 on Mauni Amavasya that was an attraction for many. There was also others planned on February 3, February 12, and February 26 for different experiences.
The site features diverse groups including saints, yogis and more all seeking the spiritual experience which highlights this as an influential space for all. Some of the additional groups include The Naga Akharas, or groups of naked Sadhus with intense traditions, and The Kinnar Akhara, representing the transgender communities. Those various people together all in one space made the environment unique and interesting for all that were in attendance. This makes the region have significance beyond spiritual grounds.
security measures for the Maha Kumbh have also made news with the integration of high technology and large amounts of police which helps manage massive amounts of crowds. Officials have been said to conduct training to learn how to handle all crowd dynamics which will keep order. Special infrastructure changes are also being addressed to manage a high traffic count for the duration of this period with facilities to offer help, guidance and direction.
While some use the site for a spiritual approach others recognize that the site draws international interests for cultural observation. It draws tourists as well as provides opportunity to see an authentic setting and traditions.
