World of Warcraft's latest expansion, The War Within, has unleashed a torrent of new creatures in the Khaz Algar zone! Hunters, rejoice! There's a whole host of new pets to tame, including some seriously awesome additions. This isn't limited to just Hunters, other players can enjoy these as companions or even mounts!

This expansive update adds reptiles, fish, beasts, and even flying critters, many found all across this new and unexplored world; from those mountainous regions in the Isle of Dorn, all the way down into the darkest depths of Azj-Kahet. There are many pets that are simply for cosmetic purposes – but even those pets greatly enhance this experience.   Many, however have some impressive stats too! The variety alone, the possibilities unlocked; this article focuses on those ten best pets!

10. Stormrook (Aradan): A Matching Mount and Pet Combo!

Aradan, a Stormrook pet, arrived with a Season 1 patch! It perfectly matches the Algarian Stormrook mount (from the Heroic edition), showing amazing attention to detail in creating consistent, aesthetically matched versions in the pet and mount design! Five different variations are available, offering a range of looks mirroring those customizations available in the mounts.

This Spirit Beast is only for Beast Mastery hunters, and you can tame multiple, so bring a friend!

9. Lynx: Cuddly Companions and Armored Warriors

Hallowfall is overflowing with cuddly lynxes in a variety of amazing colours and with awesome armor! There’s many variants you can choose! You can also get that epic armoured one called Lytfang the Lost which also directly resembles the Dauntless Imperial Lynx mount – you could also easily find that Vermillion Imperial Lynx, an unarmored version found near Lytfang; another nod toward consistent pet design!

8. Swarmites: Creepy-Crawly Flyers with Glowing Goodness!

These spooky, yet strangely beautiful flying ticks require a unique skill ("Blood-Soaked Tome of Dark Whispers" from Uldir raids). It’s a very unique pet, only unlocked under some conditions.

With four colours and three distinct head/tail shapes, and the purple variant’s awesome resemblance to the Swarmite Skyhunter mount (from the Khaz Algar Glyph Hunters achievement)? It truly showcases another example of matching mount/pet design! This pet and its variation demonstrates incredible levels of detail!

7. Undercrawlers: Detailed Spiders with a Glow-Up

Spiders have been iconic pets forever. Yet The War Within's spiders received a total upgrade!  Those highly detailed Undercrawlers feature four basic colours (green, orange, yellow, and shadow), and those same glowing variants; making their variety incredibly exciting. It’s especially rewarding after knowing just how many of these new, exciting and unique spiders actually exist!

One standout is the shadowy Xishorr; a creepy crawler found in Pillar-nest Xesh, also providing another match towards one of those mounts for another easily acquireable creature that offers even greater variety!

6. Hermit Crabs: Beachcombing Buddies with Colorful Shells

The Isle of Dorn is the key place to find a seriously wide range of these beach buddies – nearly twenty distinct variations! This includes those colorful shell variations (eight designs!), adding additional details compared to previous crabs! Although it doesn’t have a directly matching mount, many players love its immense variety alone.  It has so much aesthetic flexibility!

5. Dustmoths: Sparkling Additions from Khaz Algar and Zaralek Cavern

These unique pets can easily be found. Dustmoths, those lovely additions to that vast family, includes five variants found across many locations. Yet, they've got a special sparkly blue and purple one from Zaralek Cavern, showing just how important exploring multiple areas truly are! Those areas other than Khaz Algar are rewarded through exploring those diverse and underused areas; those locations have different kinds of those adorable moths! Some other moths directly link with various previously seen companion pets and showcase amazing design.

4. Shalehorns: Majestic Stags with a Unique Twist

While no unicorns are available in The War Within, those majestic Shalehorns get really close!  Six distinct versions in Hallowfall and Isle of Dorn make these really fun to acquire. The unique corkscrew horn gives it that majestic look!

One especially cool variant? That Fungal one, which players could get by encountering the Plaguehart rare beast! And finding those max-level beasts is also quite fun!

3. Cinderbees: Fiery Insects with Stunning Designs

These flaming bees in Cinderwold are extremely fun to acquire, too.   Many variations exist!  Their main differences involve the yellow/red accents, as well as antennae shapes.  

And the awesome Tephratennae, that pale-white rare bee with fiery features? Seriously amazing – the coolest and most distinct looking one, compared to previous bee designs.

2. Cloudrooks: Ethereal Mounts That Take to the Sky

These airy additions to the Feathermane family are pretty.   You’ll need that “Tome of Hybrid Beasts”. You will find three distinct variants (and a super accessible alternative) making them surprisingly diverse and fun, even compared to other varieties with slightly more availability. The ethereal look, coupled with accessibility really helps make these into great pets!

The Skippers are undeniably adorable, showing that even simpler, straightforward pet designs should have those endearing qualities!  This includes the five brightly colored variants – and some even make sounds, which add incredible depth and surprising additional qualities! 

But the real standout: King Splash! This rare blue variant tries doing this silly, ineffective “splash”. It’s another fun reference that brings humor, while still having incredibly detailed models that show immense amount of time, effort and detailing that make those smaller designs far more impressive!
