Starfield's Crew: A Galaxy of Companions - Ranked!

Bethesda's Starfield? It's got a massive universe, and a big part of that is its awesome companions! There are 29 recruitable buddies (including Shattered Space DLC), each with their own personalities, skills and quirks! This article ranks them all, from total duds to absolute must-haves. It will focus on how well they are created and discuss their gameplay benefits.

The game breaks these guys down into three groups: the Constellation crew (the core four that you'll always encounter), the named companions found throughout various cities, and finally the generic crew with the uninspired names like “EM Weapons Specialist.” While the Constellation characters offer super deep backstories and their own missions, other named companions provide important story arcs too; sometimes impacting these plots more than others. We cover them all!

29. The Adoring Fan: An Oblivion Holdover (and a Total Bore!)

The absolute worst of all the companions in Starfield! The Adoring Fan was in Oblivion— appearing because you chose a certain trait (“Hero Worshipped”) during creation. He’s weak in combat and personality—and largely just there as an Easter egg for fans! Totally skippable!

28. Gideon Aker: A Forgettable Friend (With Okay Weapons Skills)

Met early in New Atlantis, he's got decent ballistic/missile weapons skills, making him pretty useful for early game content! However, he's incredibly bland and irritating for a majority of players, with those repeated dull and boring quips which makes players just wanting this character to simply disappear; and with a pricey 16,500 credit cost, it isn’t necessarily cost-effective.

27. Lyle Brewer: The Whiny Corporate Hater

From Akila City, this guy is all about raiLing against corporations. While his attitude attracts some people, he annoys a great majority, his skills (some xenosociology points and shotgun abilities) don't entirely justify that negativity! So dull. A true annoyance.

26. Autumn MacMillan: A Grumpy Ranger With a Heart of Gold

(Found on Porrima III), this Freestar Ranger starts out super grumpy! She really needs to calm down; and her negativity, coupled with those frequent rants could irritate quite a few players and that defensiveness and inability to properly convey herself doesn’t exactly generate friendly conversations with other characters either. The early irritation will likely put off quite a few people; but eventually she lightens up– so there is this possibility of this change.

The Middle of the Pack: Decent Companions for Casual Players

25-15: These Companions Are All "Meh" – But Functional!

(This covers Simeon Bankowski, Rosie Tannehill, Tane Salavea, Mickey Caviar, Marika Boros, Vasco, Dani Garcia, Andromeda Kepler, Heller, Rafael Aguerro, Erick Von Prince, Lin, Sophia Grace, Sahima Ka'dic, and Moara Otero)

These named companions range from average to good! Their stats can provide nice utility; however some may annoy; mostly those that are lacking in narrative elements; and generally bland!

Bankowski’s a sniper; Rosie’s an upbeat healer; Tane's great for stealth; Caviar is uniquely eccentric; Boros is a defender of the underdog. Vasco is a decent combat backup. Garcia brings science-focused skills. Kepler is pretty kind and is skilled in engineering. Heller's engineering skills stand out, more than that pretty forgettable personality. Aguerro’s useful skills plus decent character made for a reasonable choice during that mission.

The Cream of the Crop: Top-Tier Starfield Companions

14. Lin: A Tough-as-Nails Mining Boss (Who Needs a Washcloth)

This gruff mining boss is initially hard and prickly in your earlier gameplay in the first quest given, becoming surprisingly amazing when joining later! She makes a strong companion because of this strong growth arc; but don’t overlook her Outpost Management and those generally quite memorable character design choices.

13. Sophia Grace: The Stealthy, Kind Neon Companion

She’s from Neon and offers kindness and stealth skills (three points!). A kind personality in Neon's rough environments and an impressive skill set – she deserves all the high praises that make this character selection one of the best companions you could hope for; for anyone needing strong and discrete characters.

12. Sahima Ka'dic: Shattered Space's Story-Driven Companion

(From Shattered Space DLC), she’s one of those really great characters! Better than Tane; having more dialogue and ties to that DLC’s main quest line. She adds another needed level and really creates interesting additional levels of conversation that Tane just doesn’t deliver.

11. Moara Otero: A Laid-Back Expert With Surprising Combat Prowess

This guy might be easy to miss (found during "The Old Neighborhood"), a surprisingly relaxed, unbothered companion that boasts amazing combat skills (in Marksmanship, EM weapon systems!). Another of those surprises. A hidden gem!

10. Mathis Castillo: The Surprisingly Redemptive Crimson Fleet Member

This initial irritating character (“Echos of the Past” questLine) is incredibly entertaining once he develops more strongly; the initially rather horrible attitude is still funny – and this actually gives another compelling moment showing the kind of personality which made this a great pick among various other characters. An initially annoying villain turning a much nicer ally and companion shows some amazing potential for this kind of story writing!

Conclusion: Choose Wisely! Your Crew Defines Your Starfield Adventure!

Starfield's companions aren't just faces on a ship – they change things, folks! Their unique strengths and varied quirks add additional intensity for all the potential outcomes during different kinds of events and gameplay and even the most irritating ones can offer some funny relief and moments that justify choosing these specifically, based upon needs!

From that incredibly overpowered initial Constellation squad to others waiting to be discovered; make your picks carefully, because these could entirely alter just how amazing your entire playthrough can be! This means a completely distinct playthrough! Consider both skill and personality. These really will affect your experience and choosing what might seem dull now could become valuable later, and picking someone amazing now, might irritate you eventually. A huge variety means there's a buddy for everyone; but what works best entirely depends on the player and those desires and values for those character designs.
