Snoop Dogg, a very notable figure in hip hop has become more widely known for having a long standing music career and many other ventures. This has expanded how people know him across all ages and cultures. However he's currently being looked at for choices surrounding an event with Donald Trump.
Snoop Dogg agreed to perform at the inaugural "Crypto Ball," which is being hosted by Trump's AI and Crypto Czar David Sacks. This created public discourse and led to much criticism.
The performance from Snoop Dogg upset some of the black community with many people calling him a "sell out." Several have posted strong views about how the show is perceived to align Snoop with Trump who has had many problematic and racially controversial past events. Many fans and members of different demographics noted strong concerns with this choice.
Snoop Dogg and Trump have had a tumultuous relationship throughout the years as their history can show both sides. From having mutual support to having many conflicts has brought many changes in opinion as the relationship between these two public figures has changed.
In the early 2000's they shared a good dynamic. Trump praised Snoops work in music. Along with a visit with each other on “The Apprentice” and also a Roast special where they appeared cordial.
Things changed around 2016 when Snoop supported Hillary Clinton. Following Trump’s win, he had expressed great dislike of other black performers . He even used racial slurs in how he delivered messages about those actions.
After Donald Trump granted clemency to Micheal Harris Snoop gave thanks for it with the relationship becoming different. His open and public dislike shifted as he explained that Trump did a great thing for him.
While Snoop may have mended some relationship with Trump it still was a challenge as many view him as problematic. His history with race based slurs still exists. As such some find these type of actions hypocritical in nature. Other things were shown that demonstrated an uncomfortable environment such as giving clemency to many artists who committed crimes after their public support.
The “Crypto Ball” was presented to have been a costly event between $2,500-$5,000. As Trump was seen with these large influencers the event hailed the new administration's goals to focus on future technology using cryptocurrency as a guide in all operations.
A video showing Snoop Dogg on the stage at this black tie event performing one of his greatest hits, “Nuthin but a G thang”, became popular on many social media accounts with mixed reaction. There were fans that showed great disappointment with claims that the rapper sold out the black community.
After news of the performance was public there have been some comments noting what he had done previously does not match his current actions. Those that may have supported Snoop in previous actions will have more questions. The event drew reactions regarding other African American celebrities attending and supporting Trump with multiple theories on why this event came to pass in such a public way.
After the show aired some supporters noted that the artist may not be worth their time due to this decision with other comments on how this type of decision has large ramifications as those in communities will not easily let the betrayal go by.
