Snoop Dogg ’s recent performance at the "Crypto Ball", a pre-inauguration event for Donald Trump has caused much discussion, given the complex history that they have shared with each other.
Snoop Dogg performed at a gathering before Trump’s inauguration at a party which was hosted by Trump’s newly appointed advisor on "AI and Crypto" which caused many fans and critics to share an array of emotions over what took place. This action showed his alliance and connection with Trump had gone much further then expected given their previous dynamic.
Fans online quickly shared a reaction of upset and disappointment as they tried to understand why he was working at this event given how outspoken he previously was with negativity toward Trump and his administration. Some called him a “sell out” for performing at an event that had ties to Donald Trump.
Over the years, Snoop and Trump have had a complicated connection including some friendly and confrontational moments. They range from supportive comments, comedy routines to strong disagreement over political view points. In 2007 Trump had praised his music while Snoop was on The Apprentice and then later the rapper would appear at Trump’s Comedy Central Roast in 2011 demonstrating the cordial connection at one point.
The relationship had many ups and downs. When Snoop said he would be voting for Hillary Clinton in 2016 things changed and his disdain was more apparent after Trump’s victory in the election. During this period Snoop did not hold back with negative actions including naming other black artists who performed at Trump’s first inauguration by negative labels such as "jigaboo" and "Uncle Tom”.
The tide turned when Trump pardoned Death Row Record's co founder, Michael 'Harry-O’ Harris in 2021 causing Snoop to thank and publically show support of the 45th president stating, “I have nothing but love and respect for Donald Trump,” This moment became the turning point as it would be a way that the two men made up.
It is important to acknowledge that Trump has given clemency and recognition to other black celebrities during his administration even with his problematic statements over race. It is documented that Lil Wayne, Kodak Black and Michael ‘Harry-O’ Harris all were on the receiving end of his grace. All this would seemingly give him more opportunity in diverse circles.
There were strong feelings shared online as it was pointed out by many critics that one kind act can't over shine years of racial issues he created for communities who looked to leaders for change. Critics called into question Snoop’s moral fiber.
Reactions online and from the media were all varied due to conflicting political views which were very visible after this new development in their complex and often times, confusing dynamic. These various opinions show a divide even within the fan base.
Many fans were disappointed as they could not understand Snoop Dogg seemingly selling out in what felt like an attempt for wealth gain when he is also aware of the damage of Donald Trump’s presidency. The support was seen as a betrayal.
In 2017, Snoop was the one mocking the president in his video, “Lavender” where a clown that looked like Trump gets shot in the head with a flag coming out saying “Bang”. It caused a stir amongst those that did support him , even resulting in calls to have Snoop sent to jail. Also he has said “fk the president”. This new development came after statements of open support creating the strong online opinions.
