Silent Hill 2's Maria Ending: A Seemingly Happy Ending With a Dark Twist!
The Silent Hill 2 remake brings back all those classic endings, plus a few new ones! And this allows for closer scrutiny and further speculation about what happens after the credits roll! James Sunderland's journey is intense, exploring many possible outcomes that are ultimately linked to that original setting; and those seemingly positive outcomes for James are actually revealed as being much, much darker than viewers first perceive. This particular article explores those ambiguous points concerning one very particular ending–that incredibly problematic, ambiguous Maria ending which might end much more tragically than originally perceived.
The Maria ending—where James chooses Maria over Mary—seems positive compared to those grimmer endings like "In Water". It seemingly delivers happiness! He escapes Silent Hill with Maria. But there's a dark detail hidden at the very ending: Maria coughs before the screen fades. Seemingly inconsequential. But that one little cough may actually highlight those aspects we missed!
That cough links Maria to Mary. This might seem obvious for those aware of the backstory for Maria, but for viewers who hadn't examined this fact: Maria was born from James' idealized wishes for Mary; an idealized representation, highlighting James' repressed desires which might’ve not been recognized, a response driven by his inability to accept what actually occurred. Maria looks, sounds like Mary—but sexier; this further adds meaning.
Mary's illness begins with a cough—indicated via her VHS tape. This implies Maria, as an echo of Mary, may have the same illness and eventually die from it. A potentially incredibly bleak possibility – particularly as her entire creation comes from James replicating and focusing entirely on the mental and emotional image of Mary. The resulting reality would end with Maria contracting the very same disease.
The implications? Maria's cough is deeply relevant! It possibly further develops a fan theory that James is trapped; his actions resulting in perpetual torment which makes some parts rather creepy and extremely unsettling for viewers. This concept would explain all those other James bodies around Silent Hill—a neverending nightmare!
Thankfully, you don’t need a New Game Plus to get this one; although you do need quite a bit of specific, detailed actions and events for a certain result to occur, to completely meet certain conditions in which this outcome would eventually occur.
(Bloober Team changed Maria's look in the remake; this reduces some symbolism, this becomes particularly notable concerning how her appearance is supposed to add greater symbolism that’s slightly removed now!)
The Maria ending might seem classic and is one of those many things which helped Silent Hill 2 become famous, that is James’ choice to embrace an idealized version of his dead wife, avoiding those terrible, hard truths involved; thus this results in the rejection of what had previously occurred which shows the emotional and psychological complexity involving grief and inability to completely confront those dark sides that would only make those involved go into deeper self-destruction.
Yet Maria's cough is that subtle, dark note; suggesting the seemingly positive outcome might be part of James' punishment; that horrific consequence created through his inability to deal with past guilt! It casts that seemingly happy ending as possibly among James' worst possible fates!
