Magic: The Gathering's 2025: A Year of Epic Crossovers and Massive Changes!

Get ready, Magic: The Gathering fans! Wizards of the Coast just dropped a bombshell at MagicCon Las Vegas: a completely revamped release calendar for 2025; along with some crazy changes that are going to seriously redefine the game. We’re talking a new approach that mixes Universes Beyond releases within main storylines, creating even more crossovers than ever!  This is HUGE. This completely changes those core elements of this trading card game which has lasted decades. And honestly, if you are familiar with how long this particular trading card game has persisted; then that level of reimagining has got to mean a big deal and deserves critical recognition from all interested viewers.

This also showcases what Wizards of the Coast is hoping for in the future: a major shake-up involving the creation of Universes Beyond releases; an already popular element that is designed to be inclusive of far more than just the mainline Magic: The Gathering universe! For the long-time fans, they might immediately recognize that a change such as this should generate massive interest because those mainline storylines and those more recent ones focusing on various other popular crossovers can now begin working with each other; and the most surprising aspect is how these could easily affect how main storylines are continued!

Magic: The Gathering’s Final Fantasy reveal arrives with big changes for the beloved TCG Image

The most insane news? Universes Beyond sets (like the upcoming Final Fantasy, and past releases including Stranger Things, Warhammer 40,000 and Hatsune Miku) will now be completely legal in ALL formats, including Standard.  This is insane; before this was announced, they remained mostly isolated and distinct, preventing any such collaboration; now, mainline play has all this new, creative power injection! This seriously changes everything, especially considering just how significant this element has remained.

Expect this massive development to impact how various formats will now play out! This means that far more possibilities arise! And more than anything else, this has the most direct effect on those future story lines; making crossovers possible!

To make room for this radical change in production practices; they created another interesting adjustment,  Wizards of the Coast is moving to a three-and-three structure each year: three mainline Magic sets; and three Universes Beyond sets, ensuring consistency; and planning to add additional development. These new sets should add much more new game content in a consistent timeframe.

This new Foundations set; meant to bridge the gaps; filling those additional gaps and introducing many important new elements into gameplay and to also help increase the production of powerful new items for those fans looking forward to acquiring a larger amount of resources and capabilities.
