Metaphor: ReFantazio - Undead Grius Boss Fight Guide

Metaphor: Refantazio - Undead Grius Boss Fight Guide: Avenging a Fallen Comrade!

Undead Grius: From Ally to Enemy – A Metaphor: ReFantazio Boss Battle

Metaphor: ReFantazio throws a curveball. Your loyal companion, Grius, is now a boss fight! This twist follows Grius's failed assassination attempt on Louis during the Royal Funeral.   This adds unexpected intensity! Even though this is just a one-stage fight, this undead version is surprisingly tough; combining Grius’s veteran skills with new undead abilities to deliver an extremely effective strategy, even when having his abilities reduced because of the new, undead status he currently finds himself in. Knowing how to counter those specific moves is crucial for defeating this unexpected and powerful foe; getting those much-needed resources to advance in future stages. He can deliver real surprises! That’s a big challenge for your team!

Grius’s moves are limited– a multi-target “Phantom Dance” and a standard single-target strike. But these moves are unexpectedly strong! The proper strategy however depends heavily on that recently recruited party member Hulkenberg. That's right! A new teammate helps you win against a fallen friend.

Defeating Undead Grius: Utilizing Hulkenberg’s Unique Skills

Using the Jump Thrust Knight Synthesis skill in Metaphor: ReFantazio against Undead Grius Image

Winning this fight heavily depends on using Hulkenberg’s Knight Archetype skills and her ability to use Synthesis skills – combining powers from other Archetypes, to create highly potent attacks, though at the price of one extra Turn Icon. Here is how this entire battle would work.

  1. Use Hulkenberg's Jump Thrust Synthesis skill; its intense attack lowers enemy defense each time it’s used.
  2. Then use her Knight's Proclamation skill.   This redirects Grius’s single-target attacks toward Hulkenberg,  This saves the others a ton of health points and these techniques perfectly demonstrates the advantages available to those employing her unique abilities in specific and intelligent ways. This is just extremely strategic thinking that might be a critical element in a party and not one a casual party would automatically find out.

These techniques alone are seriously effective!   But know this— Synthesis skills require both team members involved for those abilities to trigger. It requires both Turn Icons and enough MP.  This means that a Synthesis should happen during turns when other team members aren’t planning on using other skills which will help create synergy and increase potential in specific attack options.

Hulkenberg is incredibly resistant to slash attacks so this is very strategic positioning to avoid unnecessary daMAGe.

Exploiting Undead Grius’s Weakness: Light Attacks Reign Supreme!

At this point in Metaphor: ReFantazio, one character should be a Healer, using light-based attacks which happen to be exactly what is needed! This allows this character to also add in much-needed support; perfectly complementing Hulkenberg's strategy: The character has this innate Hama skill (light damage!) so that choice is fairly simple to use, and Healer learns Medi (healing) later, offering both highly damaging, efficient damage and valuable support at any moment which helps extend this strategy into later stages.

Consider the strategy which makes the most sense and how specific skills might make an otherwise tedious fight even more tedious; consider using other characters to deliver supplementary damage. Employing Strohl as a Warrior, to deliver extra slash attacks. His presence complements Hulkenberg's role and since you have this Knight's Proclamation, using additional abilities from him isn’t needed unless such support is necessary; adding those highly necessary additional attack powers when most needed.

Rewards: Experience, Resources, and a Memorable Item

The Light weakness of Undead Grius in Metaphor: ReFantazio Image

Defeating Undead Grius rewards 250 EXP, 150 A-EXP, 1800 MAG, 2000 Money, and “Grius's Memento.” That MAG is really quite useful for unlocking other Archetypes, and the EXP helps level your team!  The final encounter adds even more context regarding the character's previous demise which only adds significance in later portions of the story.

The cutscene which follows Grius’s demise is highly emotionally impacting. And the final scene shows Grius briefly regaining control just to leave one final farewell; a final testament to the sacrifices this loyal comrade and friend had endured prior. Then a major transition ensues in a transition; and the ending with Hulkenberg confirms she's ready to keep fighting and ensuring that Maria's security; the security of His Royal Highness, is ensured before transitioning to a later portion.

This fight’s challenging!  This is precisely because the opponent is not only a challenging opponent to defeat; but this unexpected battle highlights just how surprisingly well those Synthesis skills impact combat strategy and that such strategic considerations greatly impact this boss fight's ease and efficiency. Employing Hulkenberg's ability, knowing that Grius’s vulnerability to light magic really turns what seems a challenging encounter; makes winning very effective for casual and professional players alike. So make your best choices. And prepare for some serious emotion!  It's really amazing to be avenging a fallen comrade and a deeply engaging boss fight overall. And that’s precisely just why it has remained unforgettable.
