Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 – Where Does It Fit in This Crazy Story?
The annual Call of Duty release is a HUGE event. For 2024, Activision is bringing back the beloved Black Ops sub-series with Black Ops 6! But if you're new to Call of Duty, or haven't played in ages; getting into this series can be ridiculously confusing because it contains various completely different styles and timelines! It’s not some small franchise either; it has various versions all linked into this one central app; and within those various versions there exists a massive ongoing storyline.
This main app includes things such as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, Modern Warfare III, and Warzone; plus obviously Black Ops 6 (if you own those titles) – creating a unified platform containing various interconnected yet separate stories and game modes! So to fully engage requires selecting specific titles that require additional separate purchase decisions, and if you simply want to quickly play this latest release–you're missing those prior storylines, and a complete understanding of the story. This can be rather daunting!
Call of Duty used to focus on World War II, mostly as a historical anthology without massive emphasis on individual character arcs or other plot developments – it provided more historical simulations in those situations; rather than individual, complex character stories. But that all changed around 2007 with Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Suddenly this whole new series focused on contemporary warfare and had character-driven narratives – focusing those stories toward specific character-driven experiences with unique attributes – and massive, crazy set pieces. Those storylines have larger-than-life personalities and action that rivals those Michael Bay epics, with intense and high-stakes events!
Black Ops, however, is quite different. It's more focused on spy stuff— stealthy missions, sneaky operations, conspiracies, historical revisionism, and government shadiness – resulting in various interesting approaches that don't resemble the bombastic feel of the Modern Warfare series. This other franchise was a huge step in making new storylines that focused on totally unique themes from its start.
The Black Ops timeline? Crazy. It’s across nearly a century, even branching out into multiple alternate timelines! The choices in Black Ops 2 (2012) and Black Ops Cold War (2020) are all-important and canon, impacting who lives, who dies; creating various completely divergent narrative paths depending on players' decisions! It also ties into the rebooted Modern Warfare series!
Black Ops 6 sits in the middle, as a direct sequel to Black Ops Cold War and that Eighties-era storyline in Black Ops 2. This makes for an incredible release, setting the scene during that unique Nineties period, continuing the stories surrounding this particular agent: Russell Adler; this makes Black Ops 6 into something totally worthwhile – it follows his situation when framed and now fleeing, communicating this entire plot toward another, disabled agent Frank Woods! These characters from earlier show the development that some of the other characters underwent and will be particularly notable to fans who've already played earlier installments in this particular franchise.
Black Ops 6 had the longest development period EVER for a Call of Duty game – a seriously lengthy period; taking about four years— which shows the increased levels of commitment in these later games. This could easily result in something much better compared to some rushed releases that are released under tighter development periods. Remember how rushed the storyline of Modern Warfare III was? This made some people complain about this title; the critics were particularly displeased about several elements included in this new game, especially concerning several other recycled elements – thus resulting in an enormous negative reception and backlash! We’re expecting something much more fully-featured here. The prior failures may be part of the reasoning to use that far, far longer development time period which gives everyone plenty of opportunity for refinement. It seems to pay off and demonstrates smart investment that made a game even greater.
Importantly, the Omnimovement system is a game-changer that improves speed and precise movements, greatly enhancing combat. And later, it arrives in Warzone!
Here's a catch. The usual weapon/skin/gear carry-forward is GONE – it won’t bring in older items or carry across those existing elements, this doesn't mean players won’t get various new cross-overs– there will be many; including skins from some popular movies – that should definitely generate more audience participation.
However, this makes Warzone (that free-to-play battle royale mode) even more valuable, allowing previous and newer skins/weapons to cross-play in Warzone! And these ongoing changes between the mainline titles and Warzone makes for this evolving ecosystem. It shows this ongoing collaboration; thus this entire connected world adds immensely towards this ongoing storyline; highlighting those developments.
Black Ops 6 looks epic! The improved graphics, added storylines, improved weapons and gadgets, the overall polish after this lengthy production period and its incredibly enhanced gameplay; it really is set to appeal to longtime players and those coming into the Call of Duty universe! And those insane cross-platform functions that all converge around Warzone are a huge boon, showcasing an ambitious interconnected system.
Whether you love competitive multiplayer, or really adore single player games with incredible levels of detail and intense stories, or absolutely need more Zombies in your life; there really is something here for everyone!
