The X-Men are in a seriously dark place, folks. The latest Marvel Comics continuity, "From the Ashes," follows the devastating fallout from "Fall of X." Their mutant paradise, Krakoa, is gone. This loss casts the X-Men and the mutant race back into a world that hates them even more than before! This changed a lot. And X-Men #6 (by Jed MacKay and Netho Diaz) perfectly captures this bleak reality in three heartbreaking words. The sheer despair becomes intensely clear even in a single scene; and despite many optimistic aspects throughout Marvel's various superhero comics; the sheer sense of hopelessness and tragedy in a single issue provides serious intensity to this arc; and despite this comic mostly providing many lighthearted and amusing moments – the tragedy felt and deeply impacting even within this short issue really changed this arc and provides excellent and profound tension for its readers.

In a preview scene from this comic, Kid Omega and Temper stand overlooking anti-mutant protesters outside their new, rather depressing Alaskan headquarters. That old Krakoa utopia is gone! They are now using an old, abandoned Sentinel factory. A symbol, almost perfectly mirroring those sentiments of the fall.

But that is gone and this bleak situation creates an incredibly unique setting where rebuilding might never be possible and that hopelessness truly lingers.

Their current focus, their current primary mission, especially throughout the “From the Ashes” storyline, really involves finding hope and that same intense belief once more – the very core values that are still needed to generate the massive enthusiasm needed in such terrible circumstances. But without this central factor, hope; it makes the very purpose seem utterly pointless, perfectly summed up in that damning phrase by Kid Omega.
