The X-men's Reign is Over: A New Safe Haven for Mutants Emerges!
Whoa, hold onto your mutant powers, folks! The X-Men have been the rock for mutants for ages, protecting them and fighting the endless stream of crazy threats! But not every mutant wants to be a superhero! With Krakoa gone (a seriously big plot point!), the Morlocks are stepping up, creating this amazing alternative which the X-Men can't really offer anymore; an amazing and necessary alternative, emphasizing that the X-Men alone can't cater to every single mutant's desires. The Morlocks are completely changing how we view mutants in the Marvel Universe.
In Nyx #3 (check it out!), Anole (a former X-Man) discovers the Morlocks' secret underground hideout. They totally embrace Anole; and this is not so surprising, considering he fits right in with that Morlock look (those highly visible mutations make blending with regular humans extremely hard— something that this article and that new storyline emphasizes profoundly!). The Morlocks are a crucial addition to Marvel Universe because this change in the storyline creates and builds tension!
Before Krakoa, the X-Men provided that amazing mutant safe haven. However, that "safe" never really removed that inherent constant state of war! Their trainees prepared themselves for combat at every opportunity! Krakoa changed everything and really impacted the narrative—and after mutants tasted normal life, that previous world felt completely undesirable to many! Many folks (including Anole) wanted normal lives – away from the relentless fighting the X-Men represent—a viewpoint deeply reinforced throughout Nyx #3.
The Morlocks offer that new kind of life. Caliban says it perfectly: "No need to ask permission." It demonstrates what these new, more recent mutants want; creating their own kind of environment and it is shown perfectly by that key plotline around Anole's decision and it's further strengthened by that new story!
The Morlocks used to be castaways and freaks—those highly visible Mutants–but that's not quite true. The community has something incredibly precious and meaningful – pride and a newfound sense of community. That is something far more valuable and meaningful and it’s why even those mutants blending into regular society easily crave it; it also perfectly reflects upon and mirrors those human desires and social elements!
Anole isn’t the only one frustrated with the X-Men's battle focus. Even veteran X-Men like Kitty Pryde have stepped back. There's a significant conflict, that conflict highlighted in the most recent storyline in Nyx! This profound division between Cyclops and Rogue, further highlighting just why their own leadership within the X-Men can't offer what some of the mutants need.
There's this huge desire, folks – for a totally safe space where mutants can be themselves! Anole makes that perfectly clear. He's not seeking that world of regular humans; instead, Anole seeks a truly mutant-focused life and the Morlocks are becoming precisely what he needs! A completely perfect embodiment of mutual support!
This is big! This change in the overall structure shifts how we perceive mutants and their communities. The Morlocks, formerly forgotten and relegated to those far away hidden parts, now represent hope, totally rejecting that battle-worn X-Men existence; emphasizing once again that creating a truly ideal haven should never focus upon the need for combat. Instead it involves creating the most valuable parts – self-acceptance, a supportive community and creating that meaningful identity that allows any group to flourish, regardless of any other factor impacting their surroundings. Their presence showcases what the X-Men no longer really are; highlighting a crucial element necessary in superhero communities and how this needs to fundamentally change!
