We know Alfred Pennyworth's death in "City of Bane" was gut-wrenching for Batman and especially Damian Wayne. But now, we’ve got an even deeper reason to feel sorry for the young Robin - because of Alfred's last words! It really makes that whole moment in "Batman and Robin #12" a whole lot sadder!
We're seeing things from the past: Damian is all ready to ditch Wayne Manor for some alone time. But Alfred is there - trying to get his young charge to stay. Alfred always gives great advice, but the real bummer is that Damian is stubborn and tells Alfred to bug off. In the end, Alfred lets Damian leave - but just says, "I hope that the next time I see you it will be under better circumstances."
Those bad things happen when Bane does a whole lot of evil and messes with the whole Bat Family! He is in charge of Gotham and tells Batman: if any hero steps in - Alfred is dead! We’ve all been there! This leads Damian to step in! He tries to save Alfred, but of course, he’s caught - and guess what - Bane breaks Alfred’s neck right in front of Damian! Talk about a gut-punch!
The most important part: Damian realizes Alfred said he hoped the next time they saw each other would be good. Then it turns out to be the exact opposite. Not a good time! Alfred was trying to help Damian work things out! Those were the last words Damian ever got from his kind and wise mentor, Alfred Pennyworth. The thought of all this really messed up Damian Wayne’s emotional state for a long, long time, as he couldn't stop replaying that encounter and wishing things could have been different!
The most shocking thing - which made a lot of Batman fans mad, even angry, too - was the death of Alfred. Alfred Pennyworth always stayed one step ahead, giving his best advice, helping Batman with anything, and caring for Bruce Wayne so much. This death made Batman's world go topsy-turvy and turned up the intensity for Damian.
We’ll never forget Alfred, his generosity and advice - he always was there! The legacy lives on. If you're a Batman fan - be sure to check out the whole series. Batman and Robin was totally changed, but Damian still needed Alfred’s help and support.
