Donatello's Darkest Hour: The Terrifying Fate of a TMNT Brother!
Get ready for some serious feels, TMNT fans! That new comic book series is doing something unthinkable. After decades of team-ups, those awesome Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have split up. This is major. And after keeping the location and fate of each turtle as a closely-guarded secret for the last several months– a new issue gives a glimpse into that truly bleak and shocking situation that befalls Donatello. He is going through serious stuff. Be warned, spoilers ahead for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #4 (written by Jason Aaron, art by Chris Burnham, colors by Brian Reber, and a whole slew of cover artists including Rafael Albuquerque, Chris Burnham, Kevin Eastman, J. Gonzo, Danny Earls, Darick Robertson, Lee Bermejo, and Paolo Rivera)! It's set to be released on November 27, 2024.
Each turtle's storyline got its moment to be featured; creating separate storylines which add suspense to what will occur later; leaving audiences anxiously awaiting for what’s to come next! We've seen Raphael's adventures and Michelangelo's wild ride; setting up what had transpired recently and how that specific storyline changes the very direction this series would take from this point onward! And that means it is Donatello's turn.
Those descriptions found in TMNT #4 explain it simply: Donatello is in a mutant zoo, folks. Fighting for his life; and the synopsis explains that those kinds of wealthy guys come to witness these fights. The intensity and grimness of what he must undergo is quite evident! This sets up one thing– what happens when he must fight his way out of that awful cage.
Donatello has suffered serious stuff in TMNT lore; and fans who really remember those classic issues might remember one particularly disturbing situation which almost killed Donatello (in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #44 by Kevin Eastman, Tom Waltz, Cory Smith, Ronda Pattison, and Shawn Lee!). That infamous moment, that scene features him being brutally beaten to near-death, the kind of awful scene that changes a character; seriously, even those really devoted fans found that storyline extremely hard to read. He comes back with a prosthetic shell, highlighting the enormous changes and his continued suffering, with later storylines showcasing a deeply isolated, despondent Donatello; foreshadowing even more problems.
This latest ordeal in that mutant zoo is an absolutely brutal thing! It's that same hopeless despair, that utterly bleak situation from those older Comics come into this specific, highly relevant modern interpretation. That confinement adds a lot of pressure— forcing him to fight in the cage with all those wealthy folks that came to watch, bringing even more despairing misery; and he’s facing everything entirely alone! No brothers, nothing!
This is another extremely relevant thing concerning Donatello. This series makes a radical decision and completely throws out years of tradition. Those turtle brothers are facing individual challenges which emphasizes why working together has had such an important effect throughout the entire storyline for many years and emphasizes what this unique split would mean for future plots; what happens to the characters themselves and creates so many narrative challenges.
Raphael is free from his jail stint; he already met up with Michelangelo (who is now a TV star in Tokyo). That storyline is already in progress; soon after we’ll see what's happening with Leonardo. And that sets the stage for Donatello’s fight. He needs to make use of all that fighting skills; using all he’s got to completely defeat all those foes. It adds suspense—creating more excitement for those who've waited patiently to see him reunite with the team, an exciting moment for a new generation!
Donatello has always been presented as this highly skilled and devoted brother who loves to focus on inventions; yet the sheer level of brutal realism and emphasis on emotional storytelling demonstrates a level of writing capable of moving fans even when those previous themes previously were barely even considered as relevant factors. Those early glimpses into what had occurred; that early summary from those new comic books reveals how grim and difficult this arc would become. We can't wait to read what happened to our beloved turtle, especially knowing how dark and utterly intense that fight must become before this ultimately heartwarming reunion! All that brutal realism, the very stark, painful truth portrayed in this narrative, showcases those immense potential storylines available with a great cast like TMNT that has resonated across decades!
