A Crossover Forgotten by Time: The Question and Watchmen
Do you know the DC Comics classic "Watchmen?" And The Question? Well, guess what - these characters have met in a crossover, which many folks have completely forgotten! Way before Doomsday Clock!
So how did these two comic universes come together?
You can thank The Question #17 (1988) - the comic had Vic Sage taking a trip from Hub City to Seattle to chase down a dangerous assassin.
How did Vic Sage get into Watchmen?
- As he was traveling, he got himself a copy of "Watchmen", so he could get some reading done. In the comic, we see Vic Sage thinking about how cool it is, because Watchmen was such a "heavy" comic - and especially liked Rorschach! The cool part? This really did happen! That classic Watchmen graphic novel is available everywhere - including DC!
- You have to understand how the "Watchmen" story has changed the comic book world. And if you like those Watchmen collectibles or Watchmen merchandise, this little crossover might be worth checking out!
- In the story, Vic Sage, our Question hero, dreams of himself as Rorschach as he gets flashbacks! This crossover really makes a ton of sense - Rorschach was heavily inspired by The Question as it was imagined in an older comic!
Is it just a small crossover?
No way. This whole crossover gives The Question, a completely different perspective! In this issue, Vic Sage really learns from his encounters - he starts to see things the way Rorschach does. It totally flips the script because, in a later story, The Question has even more trouble keeping his temper under control - he's all over the place, because that Watchmen crossover kind of got to him.
Why is this crossover important?
- The real world - DC Comics has changed their plans about how they wrote "Watchmen"! The first idea was that Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons were going to use those popular Watchmen characters, and we wouldn’t have seen Rorschach!
- If this Watchmen crossover didn't happen, who knows if people would even realize that The Question was part of the "Watchmen" legacy! This little crossover in the comic book makes all the sense!
"Watchmen" is still super popular, and has had a lot of adaptations - even an incredible HBO series - that brings all these great characters to the screen, but there is something special about how it came into being as a comic - all thanks to the inspiration from those early DC Universe stories!
